"The cast of bizarre characters and the suspenseful events confirm Hiaasen's reputation for creating singular villains and heroes. While he's probably unpopular among some fellow citizens in his home state, he will certainly please readers who appreciate the Swiftian wit in his cautionary tales." (Publishers Weekly)
"The action is swift, and there are some very funny scenes." (Library Journal)
This is early, classic Hiaasen, that features the first appearance of Skink, the misanthrope philosopher, outdoorsman, survivalist and ex-governor of Florida in hiding. It's also narrated by George Wilson who is the original, and in my opinion, best narrator of Hiaasen's novels. When you have a smart, comic novel it always helps if you can tell that the narrator 'gets it'. George Wilson 'gets' Hiaasen. It saddens and frustrates me that many of Hiaasen's books are being re-released on Audible with a new, different narrator. I have listened to other narrators for his later novels and all have been OK but no one does Skink - and Hiaasen - like Wilson. Get this one while you can.
A reader from day 1 now a listener too! Remember honesty in a review does help you decide, even if you don't agree!
Not his best, but still great! Crazy characters, situations abound in typical Hiaasen fashion, leaving you to never wonder why all insane news stories take place in Florida.
Narration by George Wilson gives "languid Floridian" new meaning.... a great combo!
The best of his books I have read to date, and that is saying something. Great characters, hilarious plot, and spectacular ending.
Over my 70 plus years in the top 25
laughs on the edge seat, I am a Florida girl.
Great drama at the correct times!
Skink of course...I am a retired employe of the great State of Florida , takes one to know one.
I have two hard copies I made my family read, they don't like audio.
Very funny storyline and setting. Written early in his career, takes place in the 80's. Pokes fun at bass fishing, televangelists, and sleazy Florida condo developers.
Carl writes in a way that is so easy to read, you just want more. Would have scored higher but the blasphemy needs to stop. Increase the range of the cabularly and God,s name wont have to be used in vain to express the authors emotions.
Sci-fi, detective, cozy. Only give 5s to those books I think stand above the rest. 4 is a good solid book. 3 is average, nothing special.
Decent enough mystery novel I suppose. However, a few of the characters were just a bit too strange. Eating roadkill was over-the-top.
Say something about yourself!
The plot nice working by the author, didnt know when it was dated got a good surprise.
The sex and fishing scenes. Fun
Skink I think he is a classic
Skink I would like to see him eat also the Garcia & Tile partners...
Maybe if you're into bass fishing you'll enjoy this book more than I did. Normally, Hiaasen's books are so funny, it doesn't matter what the subject matter is, I'll like them. This one, no so much. Maybe too much time spent on fishing. Maybe too many similar characters, I had trouble following who was who. I'll keep reading Hiaasen, but this won't be on my list of keepers.
