Publisher's Summary

"Robert Clinch loved his boat more that anything else in the world...more than his wife...his kids...his girlfiend...even more than the largemouth bass he was pursuing." Thus begins a twisted tale of murder in the world of big-stakes bass fishing tournaments. Filled with ex-wives, evangelists, and an armed pit-bull, this is a story that could only be concocted by Carl Hiaasen, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, New York Times best-selling author, and czar of Florida noir fiction.

What the Critics Say

"The cast of bizarre characters and the suspenseful events confirm Hiaasen's reputation for creating singular villains and heroes. While he's probably unpopular among some fellow citizens in his home state, he will certainly please readers who appreciate the Swiftian wit in his cautionary tales." (Publishers Weekly)
"The action is swift, and there are some very funny scenes." (Library Journal)

    "Good, but not his best"

I will buck the trend here and suggest that this book is not Hiaasen's best. I first read "Skinny Dip" and thought it was a better paced and overall funnier book. "Double Whammy" was entertaining and is still a lot of fun, but personally, I think if you've got just enough room for one Hiaasen novel- you're better off with "Skinny Dip". If you're a fan and enjoy his or Dave Barry's novels, then you'll want to read or listen to all his books in any case. Good, (almost)clean entertainment!

    "Double Funny"

If you like Hiaasen's work, you'll love this hilarious tale of life in the pro Bass fishing world. The reader's voice adds a measure of hilarity as he skillfully gives life to these pathetic characters. All the regulars are present and ready to make fools of themselves. A simply fun listen.

    "Unbelievable DUMB!"

This book can be summed up in one word.... STOOOPID!!

There are so many countless, stupid scenes in this book, I could write for days. The author's attempt at comic relief is probably the poorest I have ever read.

The book was intended to be an over-the-top, funny, and witty fare; but I snickered all of two or three times at most, and found nothing really funny at all.

Two examples can summarize the stupidity of this "sidesplitter":

    1) One of the characters can't light a campfire, so he turns his zippo lighter upside down and pours the lighter fluid on the sticks. He then lights the fire and the campfire explodes so violently that it blows him back and singes his hair and eyebrows.

Wow... we could solve all the world's energy problems with 1 can of zippo lighter fluid if a few drops can blow up a campsite!

    2) The "loveable" character in the book, "Skink, (also call "Captain") cooks and eats a family's toy poodle. It added no value or humor and actually belittled his creation of a decent character.

The book is loaded with similarly stupid stories and jabs throughout. Yep, real funny....

As far as the overall story goes, it actually starts out pretty good. The first few hours at least kept me listening till the end so I didn't give it a 1-star.

But.... the story goes downhill quick - and in conclusion, the ending leaves many small holes unfilled.

I would definitely pass on this one.

"A must read for fishermen who like to laugh"

I think that Karl Hiassen and I could be friends. We are of the same generation and in recent years, I’ve discovered and acted on my latent talents. I am jealous more that he found his talent at a young age and was able to exploit than I am that he is a success at doing what I want to do. I’ve purchased five of his books and finished three. Only Double Whammy was an audio book.

“Double Whammy” (DW) is the third Hiassen book that I finished; the others being "Skinny Dip" and "Nature Girl". DW is the only one that was an audio book.

There is commonality between Hiassen's life and mine. We both have a humorous sarcastic bent, have lived with affluence and both grew up with bodies of water, fishing, boats, bikinis and tourists creating both sweetness and annoyances in our lives. His stories that I know of all involve these things.

Double Whammy is a story within a story within a story. Hiassen uses technically accurate facts to "hook" those knowledgeable about fishing and bass fishing in particular, on DW. Since I am quite knowledgeable when it comes to fishing, the hood was set almost immediately. When I review books or movies, I do my best so that the readers’ or moviegoers’ experience is as if they know next to nothing about the plot or outcome as possible. When I read reviews, I generally read the first and last paragraphs only. It makes no sense to spend money on a book or movie when the experience is diluted by knowing what will happen.

DW is an excellent and at times hysterical work that is most appreciated by fishermen. It's a convoluted but enjoyable ride filled a variety of characters and creatures.

If you are a fisherperson, you will laugh. For those not so oriented, replace your dictionary with the Bass Pro Shops catalog.

    "George Wilson hang it up!"

I'm so tired of paying for audio books and the narrator is so bad with all the swallowing, lip smacking, & long pauses. If these things don't bother you as they do me then you'll like the story.

This story started out slow and somewhat hokey. But the storyline and characters hooked me and kept realing me in. Once I got into it, I couldnt get out of the car and turn it off.

"Nothing deep here, just great entertainment."

Excellent way to spend a few hours, good story, great characters, and unexpectedly laugh-out-loud funny several times. Wait 'til you meet Lucas, and you'll see what I mean...

"Fasten your seat belts, it's gonna be a bumpy ride"

Carl Hiaasen is a great author with a sometimes casual disregard for the laws of science and chance, and he is at his best at these times; and this is his best of those times. If you don't like your fiction wild, improbable, irreverent (sort of like it has just snorked up a tablespoon of speed and then topped it off with a warm beer and a slice of pizza that it found stuck to the ceiling of the trailer, before running down the street with no pants on), and mixed with a bit of grumbling about how Florida ain't like it used to be, then avoid this book at all costs. But, if you can suspend disbelief for a short period of time you will be richly rewarded and entertained.
When a new Hiaasen comes out my wife and I fight, quite brutally, over them, and we both agree that this is his wildest and most entertaining. Like I said, if you're looking for an Agatha Christie, this ain't it; thank goodness.

    "OK but not great"

There are some funny (albeit dark) area's in this book. But I was very dissapointed with the overall plot, and the foul language.
Once I had finished the book, I found myself still trying to make sense of the main plot. The ending didn't tidy up loose ends.. and the way the main villian get's his due is not believable.
I would not recommend this book, there are better ways to spend the 12+ hours.
