"The cast of bizarre characters and the suspenseful events confirm Hiaasen's reputation for creating singular villains and heroes. While he's probably unpopular among some fellow citizens in his home state, he will certainly please readers who appreciate the Swiftian wit in his cautionary tales." (Publishers Weekly)
"The action is swift, and there are some very funny scenes." (Library Journal)
I'm sorry to contradict the other reviewers that liked this story, but I had a very hard time finishing it.
I found it to be senseless and inane. Character development was almost non-existent. The plot was unbelievable and rambling. This reminded me of some B and C movie "wanna-be" comedies that have no intelligent humor at all.
Even the grammar was atrocious. I skimmed through the last part of the book as I just wanted it to be over.
The narrator was fine, it was the material that stunk.
Don't waste anything on this book. I'm asking for my credit back.
Eat, sleep, breathe, listen to Audible.
This book was totally not what I expected. The story's layout almost reminded me of Confederacy of Dunces. I love a good murder mystery and although this one was pretty predictable, the colorful characters and silly plot turns kept me engaged the whole time. I hadn't heard of this author before, but I think he'll become one of my favorites. Thanks for putting this book as a daily deal Audible!
I don't like fishing, but my son loves bass fishing and wants to go pro, so I thought I'd give it a listen. I listened to it all day. Great thriller with great characters. A very good listen for those who like lighthearted mysteries.
Finally a different storyline. As an avid fisherman I enjoyed the story behind the story
The cheating and the comradery among the fishing pros is very believable
But the narrator had his mouth too close and I absolutely hated hearing the swallowing and other mouth noises
At times it was so bad I had a hard time listening
a humble, seeking, loudmouth, Jesus lover, and sometimes heretic explores his questions, concerns, and varied interests through books.
This is a chaotic thrilling story of murder and cheating in the fast paced world of professional bass fishing. Don't worry, you do not need to like fishing to enjoy this book :)
This book is a nonstop laugh and is filled with characters you will love!
There are a couple offensive scenes involving a dog and some making Christianity look foolish. Though there are plenty of redeeming scenes!
If you like to laugh in the midst of action this is the book for you!
This is early, classic Hiaasen, that features the first appearance of Skink, the misanthrope philosopher, outdoorsman, survivalist and ex-governor of Florida in hiding. It's also narrated by George Wilson who is the original, and in my opinion, best narrator of Hiaasen's novels. When you have a smart, comic novel it always helps if you can tell that the narrator 'gets it'. George Wilson 'gets' Hiaasen. It saddens and frustrates me that many of Hiaasen's books are being re-released on Audible with a new, different narrator. I have listened to other narrators for his later novels and all have been OK but no one does Skink - and Hiaasen - like Wilson. Get this one while you can.
A reader from day 1 now a listener too! Remember honesty in a review does help you decide, even if you don't agree!
Not his best, but still great! Crazy characters, situations abound in typical Hiaasen fashion, leaving you to never wonder why all insane news stories take place in Florida.
Narration by George Wilson gives "languid Floridian" new meaning.... a great combo!
The best of his books I have read to date, and that is saying something. Great characters, hilarious plot, and spectacular ending.
