Lamar Pye has escaped from Oklahoma State Penitentiary, accompanied by his idiot cousin and a vicious but cowardly artist. To have stayed in prison was certain death, but his chances on the outside are not much greater: his excesses know no bounds - one killing follows another. But one murder brings his nemesis upon him: Bud Pewtie of the Highway Patrol loses his partner in a blood-soaked shoot-out with Lamar, and from that moment on, nothing will stop him from getting even.

"This seriocomic chase thriller packs a punch." (Library Journal)
I'm a 36 yr. old master of no paticular trade, but currently working in the oil patch. I'm not very critical and love to consume audiobooks
I didn't realize that this book had been around for awhile. I was calling several people that like Cormac McCarthy and books that I enjoy and telling them I had a new guy they had to read. The joke is on me this book has been around awhile. All that being said it was a fantastic read. The plot make incredibly brutal characters seem logical and even a bit noble. I'd recommend this one to anyone that enjoys a bit of the darker side of people and characters.
Seldom will you read a Book such as this, describing in detail the inner feelings of an Officer who has to face the perils of the the big ugly world outside. I enjoyed this Book tremendously.
This will stay with you long after you have finished it. It is an absolutely excellent, hauntingly good tale. I gave it a four star at first cause of issues with the plot, but then changed it later after having time to digest it all. This is an easy recommendation to anyone who is fine
with a little rain on a sunny day.
It eas great but I generally do not listen more than once.
Yes. I had to keep listening.
No, but it was very enjoyable
This was my first encounter with this author and I look forward to more.
Wonderfully written. Narration truly spectacular. Several steps beyond the typical thriller. Not for the faint of heart, however!
I've now listened to two of Stephen Hunters audio books. I find that his characters are well developed and the contents are well researched. His stories move with a fast pace from beginning to end. The only flaw that I notice is the excessive use of profanity through out. I know that he is being realistic in the language of his characters, but needs to tone it down a bit.
