Publisher's summary

America’s most-read, most-watched, and most beloved serial killer - Dexter Morgan - is back. After selling more than one million copies and inspiring the wildly popular number one Showtime series and top-rated crime drama on pay-cable television, New York Times best-selling author Jeff Lindsay returns with his most hilarious, macabre, and purely entertaining novel yet.

Dexter Morgan has always lived a happy homicidal life. He keeps his dark urges in check by adhering to one steadfast rule...he only kills very bad people. But now Dexter is experiencing some major life changes - don’t we all? - and they’re mostly wrapped up in the eight-pound curiosity that is his newborn daughter. Family bliss is cut short, however, when Dexter is summoned to investigate the disappearance of a 17-year-old girl who has been running with a bizarre group of goths who fancy themselves to be vampires. As Dexter gets closer to the truth of what happened to the missing girl, he realizes they are not really vampires so much as cannibals. And, most disturbing...these people have decided they would really like to eat Dexter.

Jeff Lindsay’s best-selling, dark, ironic, and oftentimes laugh-out-loud hilarious novels about the lovable serial killer with no soul (but a redeeming desire to kill only people who deserve it) have gained a legion of fans and assumed a place in our culture.

More dastardly deeds desired? Listen to more Dexter.

Reader is awful

I should state that I am not really sure how good the story is or isn't -- the reader is so awful that I had a really hard time paying attention to the story or caring about any of the characters. That is very sad because I have adored every one of the Dexter books up until this one. I tried searching to see if the old reader had also performed this book but to no avail.

I really am interested in hearing more about Dexter and his new baby but the reader is so horrendous I may just go buy the paper book. His renditions of female characters - Rita, Deborah, Astor are about equivalent to nails on a chalkboard. I'm hoping that Audible will bring the old reader back and maybe have him do a reading of this and the next book so I can find out what happens... Until then, I guess I'm off to another series. A real shame.

Boring

If you do not follow Dexter on Showtime you have no idea what is going on in this book. I could not finish the book.

Maybe not the best Dexter book to start with

I picked this up on a special offer from Audible, but not being exposed to any of the previous Dexter books, this may not have been the best book to start with. I was lost and confused through the beginning as no summary or history was given to help understand the basis of the series or the characters. Dexter comes across as a blend of Forest Gump and Rainman, and I had to guess at many of the story nuances, such as what the "Dark Passenger" was through most of the book. Maybe the author should spend his time sprucing up the story instead of narrating it.

Bring back Nick Landrum... PLEASE

How could the performance have been better?

Have Nick Landrum read ALL the Dexter books.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

The book was amazing as are all the Dexter books, but you cant change narrators in the midst of a series.

Any additional comments?

I was incredibly disappointed when I downloaded Dexter is Delicious and did not hear Nick Landrum reading. It was a huge let down. I won't even purchase Double Dexter it changed the whole flow of the series for me. When you read every character had a different voice and it made for a great listening experience. Don't get me wrong loved the series, but changing narrators in the middle wrecked the experience for me.

Disgusted

This book was gross and disgusting. Not even Jeff Lindsay can make cannibalism "funny."

a disappointment

Although the story was another great one from author Jeff Lindsay, his reading of it had me begging for it to end! Why do producers allow the authors to read their own work? It was stilted, jerky and monotonous! Nick Landrum read the previous books, capturing the delightfully deadly Dexter's personality so well. Narrators, as well as actors, are TRAINED to read, imbuing life into the books and creating the experience that leaves us begging for more! I am saddened that Mr. Lindsay felt the vain need to step in and screw it up. Would he step in and take over the role of Dexter on TV? Of course not! Because he isn't TRAINED to do so and would leave it for the PROFESSIONALS! Enough said! His speaking voice is VERY pleasant, but a pleasant voice does not make an enjoyable book. The story line was a bit off the deviously dangerous path we have been used to, though I do feel that it is to create more depth in the characters. After all, Dex can't just be killing all the time! The family unit has grown, and with it Dexter has begun to establish emotional ties. I know others disagree, but I think the story itself is worth the suffering through the authors reading of it. Finally I would like to address the reviewers who think a homicidal hero is terrible and are mad over buying and/or listening to this... did you READ the description? What part of "lovable serial killer with no soul" did you not understand?

WOW! What a terrible Dexter Novel.

I love Dexter and his Dark Passenger, but I did not even like this weak kneed, worry wart version of my favorite serial killer. Where is the Sociopath I have come to love who embraces his Dark Passenger in the beautiful moonlight? The one who follows Harry's code and seeks to right wrong in his own twisted way. To tell the truth I hated this book and in fact almost didn't finish it. I thought the author was okay as a reader, but his writing this time, in fact since the second Dexter book, sucked! Please bring back the Dexter we love, the one that was good enough for a TV series to based on. The one who loves his Dark Passenger and will train Astrid and Cody in the Harry Code and get rid of boring Brian the DEAD brother!

Getting Dexter

Nick Landrum really "got" Dexter. I started off to write this review only to discover that the reader that is boring me to tears is none other than the author! All I can think of as I attempt to wade through this audiobook is that the reader doesn't really get Dexter.

Nick Landrum really characterized Dexter with his reading/acting skills. He brought us that sardonic side of Dexter just with his tone of voice. The author as reader is just reading. I so loved the other Dexter novels (via audiobook) but I'm not sure I can finish this one. I would have loved to hear Landrum's Dexter bring this new twist to Dexter's life. I hope the publisher will consider doing another version as this one is not up to par.

Yes, I agree wtih others, Jeff Lindsay is a brilliant writer but not so hot as an audiobook reader. Let the pros put the polish on your work, Jeff!
