Classic Heyer

One of my favourite Heyer romances this book translates quite well into an audio format. Stars one of Heyer's typical heros - handsome, dangerous, and cynical - with a smart, courageous, ladylike heroine. This is the sequel to 'These Old Shades' and although it stands very well on its own, one needs to read the prequel in order to fully appreciate some of the characters - in particular the characters of Avon and Leonie. The only slight quibble I have concerns the narrator's voicing of some of the male characters. There is a decided lisp given to many of the more dandyish of the male characters which can become a little distracting. It is rather unlikely that all Georgian dandies lisp when they speak so I think this particular style of voicing was a little overdone in this audiobook.

worth listing to again and again , and again

If you love regencys you'll adore this one, of course all of ms heyer's books are good, but for the full family you need to get These Old Shades with Léonie and Justin parenting Dominic in Devil's Cub and Dominic and Mary are the grand-parents of Barbara in An Infamous Army. than again if you want to really get the whole story line be sure to get The Black Moth where the wicked Duke of Avon is known as Satanas and he really lives up to the name what a dad!!

Georgette Heyer is a treasure

Any additional comments?
Devils Cub is the sequel to These Old Shades, but it definitely is a stand alone book.
The "cub" is the son of Lord Vidal who was a first class rake until he settled down with the love of his life. The "cub" is following in the rakish footsteps of his father, and in fact may even surpass the Lord in his outlandish behavior. The cub is forced to leave town and he takes along a play toy. Alas it was the wrong play toy and she teaches him a mighty lesson. One of my favorite characters in this book is Rupert. He is the Lord's brother - the cub's uncle. He is one of the funniest characters in any of Georgette Heyer's books. Speaking of Heyer, she is a fantastic writer. Her mysteries are very good, but her Regency novels, such as Devils Cub, are superb. She has a Jane Austen style but her story lines are a little more active. She tells great love stories but does not write any sex scenes. Her romance scenes are even more romantic than the steamy sex scenes you can find in many other Regency books. I have read all of Heyer's books and have only been disappointed once out of the scores of books (An Infamous Army was disappointing to me).

One of my favorite Heyer books

Loved the story and the narration was very good except for the voice of Vidal, which is very disappointing. It is a most unattractive voice that doesn’t match with the man in my imagination at all!

beautiful performance

The reader here is simply amazing with all kinds of voices, including women's voices. this is the second of a series of the authors books set outside of the regency that star rakes and bad boys and unusual women they fall in love with. The violence against women is tough to take at times. The rest of the book, though, has the author's wonderful trademark characterizations and comedy of manners.

One of the best of all

Stellar G Heyer that eclipses nearly all romances in time. These Old Shades a peer to this one. Learn from a masterful writer with storyline the best!

quite funny

I enjoyed this book, which is a delightful mix of outright farce and romance novel cliche. It works because Heyer never gets too arch or over-the-top about it, and always plays it straight. My only quibble is with the narration. The reader's own voice is fine, but the vocal characterization he chose for Vidal is distinctly grating - and unfortunately, not in a good way.

Bad boy Vidal finds love in this riotous romp

Any additional comments?

Georgette Heyer continues to delight her readers and listeners with clever, witty dialogue and dashing heroes and intelligent, lovely heroines. In this story we meet the young Marquis of Vidal who gambles, seduces women of little virtue, and fights duels almost on a weekly basis. Banished to France by his father, Vidal thinks he is carting off a silly wench to be his mistress, but Mary, the girl's sister, has taken her place in order to save her sister's virtue. The result is a merry romp across France with a cast of characters all trying to catch up with the Marquis who is chasing after Mary. As writer Katie Fforde said, "Wonderful characters, elegant, witty writing, perfect period detail and rapturously romantic. Georgette Heyer achieves what the rest of us only aspire to."
Michael Drew narrated this audio book. His performance was simply masterful. The voices he employed so entirely matched the characters' personalities that I was in awe. Bravo!

Narrator’s grating Vidal and Avon dims this enchanting Heyer story

The narrator’s character voice for Vidal is so angry and grating that it requires the listener to be in love with Vidal already to endure this recording of Devil’s Cub. The Duke was also a miss, although easier to forgive. I hope this book gets re-issued by a different narrator - the Comyn voice was also irritating. Drew did his best work with Rupert Alastair and the female leads roles, but this Heyer hero in particular needs a deft narrator with strong comic and dramatic range to bring out his lovable side. I was disappointed that my favorite Heyer book ended up being one of my least favorite listens.
