Publisher's summary
Four stories deal with Errol Stein's idiosyncratic musings on mortality, love and the outrageous demand of an ancient Mayan god. From Philadelphia to Tucson to the coast of the Yucatan Errol is tested and gets by, not always getting it right, but always changed by his experiences. In "Interloper", Errol survives a near fatal tractor accident on Camp America and transforms a phantom being as it journeys from one life form to another. "Descending Gods" finds the Stein family on the Yucatan coast where Ah Mucen Cab demands the sacrifice of Errol's son in an encounter fueled by a psychedelic rum drink. "Javelina Stew" recalls his arrival in Tucson and attempt to rescue a drowning ferocious animal from a swimming pool in a blinding Sonoran desert monsoon. Stein's musings on mortality, the meaning of a blues legend and poet collaborator's cryptic verses are examined in "In the Days Before Rock and Roll". In stories ranging over a 40-year partnership with his beloved Wanda we see Errol struggling to make sense of a life's lessons and ultimately getting it right.

When Alexandra ("Bo") Fuller was home in Zambia a few years ago, visiting her parents for Christmas, she asked her father about a nearby banana farmer who was known for being a "tough bugger". Few authors write with such sheer love of story and language as T. C. Boyle, and that is nowhere more evident than in his inventive, wickedly funny, and always entertaining short stories. Here are 14 new tales previously unpublished in book form. By turns mythic and realistic, farcical and tragic, ironic and moving, Boyle's stories have mapped a wide range of human emotions. The stories here reflect his maturing themes.

Story
In Christopher Moore's ingenious debut novel, we meet one of the most memorably mismatched pairs in the annals of literature. The good-looking one is one-hundred-year-old ex-seminarian and "roads" scholar Travis O'Hearn. The green one is Catch, a demon with a nasty habit of eating most of the people he meets.

Story
A beautifully written, unforgettable novel of a troubled marriage, set against the lush landscape and political turmoil of Trinidad. Monique Roffey's Orange Prize-shortlisted novel is a gripping portrait of post-colonialism that stands among great works by Caribbean writers like Jamaica Kincaid and Andrea Levy. When George and Sabine Harwood arrive in Trinidad from England, George is immediately seduced by the beguiling island, while Sabine feels isolated, heat-fatigued, and ill-at-ease.

In his debut collection of short stories, Robert Sheehan disappears into characters, challenging the complacencies of everyday experience, often from entirely unexpected angles. Informed by the author’s peripatetic life, Disappearing Act reflects on the absurdity of human behaviour. Sheehan delves deep into his characters’ streams of self-talk and self-imposed delusions, exploring the dark impulses that lurk below the shiny surfaces of many outwardly normal lives.
