Seán Barrett at his best - I could listen to anything he does - narrating the best of Phil Rickman. Fully rounded characters, their histories and back stories carefully and subtly wound into the narrative without halting the pace.
"Complex but worthwhile"
It took a while to get into this book but it was worth the effort. The plot is complex, as are the characters but the complexity proved to be essential and became one of the most positive aspects of the storytelling.
"phil rickman at his best"
when you have a story by phil rickman and its being read by sean barrett there is no better combination.this was for me everything i wanted for a holiday listen....absorbing,intriguing and so entertaining, this was spooky supernatural, thought provoking and physiologically brilliant.
I have loved all of the Merrily Watkins books and I look forward to new titles coming out. However I made the mistake of purchasing December, I had two attempts at listening to the book, after three hours I could take no more and gave up. This is only the second book in 180 downloads that I have done this with. I did not like the way in which the story flitted around, I felt the narrator tried to hard and got in the way. The book does not have the charm that Merrily has and I found it difficult to invest in the characters. Nevertheless this is my impression after three hours and it may get better.
