Publisher's summary

It’s vampire politics as usual around the town of Bon Temps, but never before have they hit so close to Sookie’s heart….

Growing up with telepathic abilities, Sookie Stackhouse realized early on there were things she'd rather not know. And now that she's an adult, she also realizes that some things that she knows about, she'd rather not see—like Eric Northman feeding off another woman. A younger one.

There's a thing or two she'd like to say about that, but she has to keep quiet—Felipe de Castro, the Vampire King of Louisiana (and Arkansas and Nevada), is in town. It’s the worst possible time for a human body to show up in Eric's front yard—especially the body of the woman whose blood he just drank.

Now, it's up to Sookie and Bill, the official Area Five investigator, to solve the murder. Sookie thinks that, at least this time, the dead girl's fate has nothing to do with her. But she is wrong. She has an enemy, one far more devious than she would ever suspect, who's set out to make Sookie's world come crashing down.

For The First Time I'm Glad I Didn't Listen

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who loves the series or TrueBlood (though I do view them as two totally different monsters). This book covers so much and answers a lot of questions that have come up so far, yet it does leave us wondering at the end which is typical of any good series book.

Who was your favorite character and why?

While I do love Eric so much and would give my right arm to actually meet him and be his lover, I have to admit that in this series, I once again fell in love with Bill. But my favorite character from this book is Dermit. He seems like such a sweetheart that really loves and cares for Sookie.

What does Johanna Parker bring to the story that you wouldn???t experience if you just read the book?

Even when I read the hard copy of these books, I hear Johanna Parker's voice in them. She IS Sookie. She has done a great job with this book as with the rest in the series. I listened to one book that she did not read and it just wasn't the same. I had to actually force myself to listen to that one. She IS the voice of Sookie.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I really tried to listen to this book in one sitting, finding it hard to even fall asleep listening to it even though I always sleep with a book playing because I wanted to know what was going to happen next. It is a bit on the depressing side, though a death in my own family may have brought that side out the most to me. I still am VERY glad I didn't just go by the reviews I had read and got the book. It's one of the better in the later of the series.

Any additional comments?

Remember, reader reviews aren't all they are cracked up to be. There are some times I wish I would have listened, but this one time I am glad I didn't because this book is much better than many of the last books in the series. With the new option to return books, I say that if you have enjoyed ANY of the books in this series, give it a try. I thought it was one of the better choices I had made in buying books.

Needs more...

Is there anything you would change about this book?

This book is lacking some of the content of others. It leaves you craving more information if you have been the beneficiary of her previous books.

If you’ve listened to books by Charlaine Harris before, how does this one compare?

This one is OK and no more, clearly it was written to meet a publishing deadline and provide only a little plot line and insight into Sookie and her friends. I was left feeling like I'd read a few chapters instead of a complete novel.

What does Johanna Parker bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Johanna just sounds right as Sookie.

Do you think Deadlocked needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

Deadlocked clearly needs to be completed, a follow-up is necessary.

Can't wait for the next one!

Would you consider the audio edition of Deadlocked to be better than the print version?

No idea! Can't see to read print.

Any additional comments?

Ended too soon! I guess in a way that means it was good.

Bad Performance

Is there anything you would change about this book?

The narrator of this book does male voices very poorly. I felt the performance was disjointed. I will not buy another book if she narrates the series. Her British accent for Pam was horrible.

Would you be willing to try another book from Charlaine Harris? Why or why not?

Yes if there is another narrator

How did the narrator detract from the book?

voices were poorly done.

I love this entire series!

I am glad that Charlaine has tied up a lot of unanswered questions in this book. I love that our narrator has gotten so much better with the characters since book one. I look forward to the final book of the series after this one and will miss the characters very much! Quinn calling her on her birthday seemed a little strange, but that would be one of the loose ends being tied up since he is has a baby tiger on the way. He did his part to keep the tiger line going. I do think he is still interested in Sookie though. I like Eric, but he just doesn't seem right for Sookie, with all the power struggles that he is involved in. Bill is not the best thing for her either. She did just save Sam's life, but at what cost? What will come of their relationship? Will anything that happens in the future be due to the cluviel dor (sp)?? I drive an hour each way to work and enjoy listening to this series while I travel. It keeps my mind off the traffic. Some books are better than others, but that is true of almost any series.

Johanna Parker is a rock star.

Just a shout out to Johanna Parker. I would listen to any book she read. She's funny, has a light touch and a very listenable voice. Never ever annoying, or grating. Never gets in the way of the material. Oftentimes elevates the material. And I'm not a relative or a friend. Just an average listener!

Her heart wasn't in it

Hey Charlaine, are you getting a little tired of penning the Sookie Stackhouse stories? Seems to me like you are. The story was lackluster, and just didn't seem to grab. There was no fun, and even friends became foes. I REALLY like this series, but I hope this doesn't signal the demise. What I love about the books just wasn't there; the underdog making good with her wits, her loyalty to friends and lovers, and that touch of innocence that seems to sweeten the story. It just wasn't there this time.
Kudos to Johanna Parker for once again doing a stellar reading regardless of the story line.
