Publisher's Summary

Marty McDougal is a wannabe horror writer with a terrible secret. From off the grid in Texas Hill Country, he publishes his first novel. Saddened to see the horrible and insulting reviews, he decides to take action. The unfortunate reviewers had no idea who they were dealing with. With the help of his deranged mom and homicidal brother, Marty sets out to create a whole new horror story at the expense of his critics. One by one the bizarre family takes out their anger on the group. In the process, one of their victims, April, learns something about herself no one thought possible. What ensues is a circus of bloody mayhem unlike anything seen before.

Where should I start with this? I guess I’ll get the fact that this is extreme horror out of the way. That means you are going to find highly grotesque scenes of violence and perversion. It means that different kinds of objects will be used to penetrate the body in various different ways. It means that if you have the slightest of squamish stomachs, then you should turn away now. This book pulls no punches, and is unapologetic in it’s mercilessness.

The setup is a bit interesting. I think anyone who writes for a living or has to deal with someone who reviews works might connect with it on some level. Backwoods hillbilly writer writes, gets bad reviews, hillbilly family kidnaps reviewers, and does the most despicable things to them…..even worse than even YOU could imagine.

That’s not to say there isn’t moments of heroism, after all, April Almighty does live to see a sequel or two. How she goes about this is discovered about 75% of the way through, and let me tell you, it’s just odd. In later books, you’ll get to see just how this power works, but for now you’re left asking “what the hell just happened?”

I’m still trying to decide if April is as twister as her captors.

Audiobook Review: Nina Blackwood does this story so much justice. She has the characters absolutely down to perfection. Her voice is smooth, even, and sexy throughout. It was definitely odd for me to hear a woman read such horrific acts of violence and perversion, but after finishing this audiobook, there would be no other that I’d like to have done it. It’s as close to perfect as you can get. The contrast between her voice and the events happening make a very intriguing pair.

The Bottom Line: If you like your horror bloody, and sex dirty and disturbing, then this thing is for you! You’re not going to be thinking too hard about the events in the book, but it will do what it’s supposed to do and make your stomach turn.

    "Wow."

I started this on an hour long car trip, thinking I would be okay with turning it off after an hour. I was wrong. I couldn't wait to plug my phone back in to listen. Gruesome, gory, grotesque...amazing. I can't wait to read/listen to the rest of the series.

    "Awesomely Disturbing!"
What made the experience of listening to Dead to Writes the most enjoyable?

Enjoyable? Nerve-wracking!!! I was ALMOST ready for this story. In fact, I was thinking to myself 'hey, you've toughened up a bit, since your first Tim Miller book'! No thrills or chills for THIS girl ! Until... The scene involving Cletus and Herbert... Oh my god! And then it got extreme!

What was one of the most memorable moments of Dead to Writes?

See above ! Also, April's new talent was extremely memorable. 'Nuff said.

Have you listened to any of Nina Blackstone’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Yes, I actually listened to the second book in this series, first. This one is a helluva lot more crazy. (In terms of people being weird of their own accord, not with any extraterrestrial influence). She did a great job with the idiotic redneck voices. And yet, had a surprisingly sweet voice for each of the female characters!

If you could rename Dead to Writes, what would you call it?

Deliverance? Just kidding, sort of, since this is WAY more twisted than "squeal like a pig, boy!". WAY more disturbing!

    Any additional comments?

I would only recommend this book to fans of SAW, Hostel, etc., who weren't satisfied with the levels of gruesomeness that occurred. If you've ever watched The Human Centipede, all the way through, and LIKED it, then this should be easy listening for you! I have a love/hate relationship with this genre/author. Obviously, since I gave it five stars across the board and was totally *warning! Danger!* while writing my review. This book was totally well written , well performed, and made my skin crawl! See? Enjoy!
