Publisher's summary

A prison doctor injects a condemned serial killer with a formula designed to keep his consciousness awake while his body rots in the grave. But all drugs have unforeseen side-effects. Before he can be buried, the killer wakes up. Hungry. Infected. Contagious. This is the way the world ends. Not with a bang… but a bite.

Good story, but.....

I like the cherecters and the story. what bothered me is that it takes to chapter 51 before any characters start to have a shred of understanding about any of the days events. Hopefully the next story moves along a bit more naturally.

Great Zombie Fiction

Would you consider the audio edition of Dead of Night to be better than the print version?

Yes because its hard to read during a commute

What was one of the most memorable moments of Dead of Night?

The beginning scenes with the mortuary and the hunt through the woods.

Which scene was your favorite?

The coffee shop scene where the escaped zombie murder enters the starbucks and is left to your imagination mostly.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Just good fiction

Any additional comments?

Should be a movie, Lead character was a little over the top at the end but what the hell I liked resident evil too.

slow realization

Would you try another book from Jonathan Maberry and/or William Dufris?

I migth try another book but it'll be a while

What do you think your next listen will be?

something more realistic;

Have you listened to any of William Dufris’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

i believe i have and this one is as good as the others

Was Dead of Night worth the listening time?

it was, however it came close to being unfinished listening

Any additional comments?

It seems that people in this book are DUMBfounded by the encounters with the living dead. If the book is set in the contemporary time and culture (Blackberry, Taylor Swift), why does it take almost half a book for anyone to realize that people who don't die easily are zombies (given the immense popularity of this genre these days)?? And why does it take anyone, especially cops, such a long to realize they have to shoot for the head in order to kill, given the fact that body shots didn't work? I mean...come on!!

Almost Zombie-like

Any additional comments?

I’ve read other zombie books (J.L. Bourne) before this one and I would recommend passing. The characters were well developed, but it was zombie in the way that I understand zombies to be. In fact, they weren’t even referred to as zombies. But, I don’t think the characters had time to think about it because the book moved so quickly. Except, the scene at the mortuary that set the stage for what would eventually occur. One thing I like about zombie movies, they leave the origin out of the story. Once you learn the origin of zombieism you’re no longer interested or scared. When we don’t know the origin our imagination runs wild. The origin (in this book) seems very plausible, but it did not make the story any better.

It’s an alright book, but doesn’t provide much for the zombie-loving community.

Original Zombies!

What did you love best about Dead of Night?

The zombies were original and pretty gross. I would run screaming from them!

What did you like best about this story?

The concept of how the zombies came to be and the characters reaction to them made the story believable. It left me hoping the government isn't working on anything that crazy.

What about William Dufris???s performance did you like?

William Dufris isn't a narrator who reads with the same inflection all the time, he puts some serious acting into his voice.

If you could take any character from Dead of Night out to dinner, who would it be and why?

If I had to take someone out to dinner from this book it would be JT, because Dex is just to scary.

solid book overall, but slow at times

I was about 3hrs in and thinking about returning the book when it finally got good. There were a few other dips, but overall, it was a solid book. I love William Dufris from Old Man's War, and he did not disappoint. I have not decided if I will continue the series or not. I probably will, but not until I go through other books on my list.

Give it a minute

To be clear, it is not that this book takes too long to develop. Quite the contrary, the pace moves along quickly. However, the first several chapters seem to lack substance, or depth, in regard to the characters specifically. Give it a minute! The characters do gain depth through added layers, and of the story will grab a hold of you!

Great story, mixed narration

Overall a very intriguing take on the genre. Well written with nicely fleshed out characters.

My only issue was with the narration. For a portion of the first half, it sounds as if the narrator has a bad head cold and sounds overly melodramatic.

Once you get past the "I really should have called in sick" stage to the "I'm feeling much better now, thank you" stage, the narration is actually quite well done.

Timeless

No book by Jonathan Maberry deserves these bad reviews. And people saying the performance were bad obviously did not get far into this recording. People say he's "the next Stephen King" which is not true. He's BETTER and we ALL know that. I started with this book and then proceeded to read all of the books following in the timeline and then went back to read the Joe Ledger series. Each book is at least 12 hours long and these people are saying this stuff is overrated 🙃 you lie!
