Publisher's Summary

Crazy Rich Asians is the outrageously funny debut novel about three super-rich, pedigreed Chinese families and the gossip, backbiting, and scheming that occurs when the heir to one of the most massive fortunes in Asia brings home his ABC (American-born Chinese) girlfriend to the wedding of the season.

When Rachel Chu agrees to spend the summer in Singapore with her boyfriend, Nicholas Young, she envisions a humble family home, long drives to explore the island, and quality time with the man she might one day marry. What she doesn't know is that Nick's family home happens to look like a palace, that she'll ride in more private planes than cars, and that with one of Asia's most eligible bachelors on her arm, Rachel might as well have a target on her back. Initiated into a world of dynastic splendor beyond imagination, Rachel meets Astrid, the It Girl of Singapore society; Eddie, whose family practically lives in the pages of the Hong Kong socialite magazines; and Eleanor, Nick's formidable mother, a woman who has very strong feelings about who her son should--and should not--marry. Uproarious, addictive, and filled with jaw-dropping opulence, Crazy Rich Asians is an insider's look at the Asian JetSet; a perfect depiction of the clash between old money and new money; between Overseas Chinese and Mainland Chinese; and a fabulous novel about what it means to be young, in love, and gloriously, crazily rich.

    "Narration is horrible"
What disappointed you about Crazy Rich Asians?

I had a lot of difficulty getting through the narration of this book. I speak Chinese and know how the asian dialects sound; the narrator obviously does not know either. It was painfully annoying listening to her attempts to mimic the accents and the language -- it was downright insulting at times. Her British accent was fine but anytime she tried to speak with an accent or use the Chinese words, I cringed and unfortunately, it ruined the book for me. I think I would have enjoyed the book much more if I had read it rather than listening to the narrator.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

    The general story is interesting.

How could the performance have been better?

A narrator who actually spoke Chinese and could mimic the accents, without being insulting

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

The story kept me going or else I would have given up on it after the first few chapters.

    "A Fun Beach Read"

Although this book gets a little close to being Chick-lit I found it a lot of fun and had a difficult time putting it down. I have spent a fair amount of time traveling in Singapore and Malaysia and very much enjoyed the author's descriptions of different areas, food and the over all sense of place.

I have had no experience with the variety of "crazy rich" Asians described in the book, the "regular" people who live in Singapore and Malaysia are indeed delightful.

    "Annoying Narration"
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

Narrate the book without the exagerrated accents so we can hear the words clearly. The constant shifting back and forth of accents and voices made it difficult to follow the dialogue.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Lynn Chen?

Anyone incapapble of doing "chinese" accents. The accents in a different light could be thought of as offensive stereotypes.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

    no

I almost fell off the treadmill repeatedly from uncontrolled laughter listening to this book. Light and easy, nothing really profound, but you cannot put this down. I looked up Kevin Kwan and discovered this is his first novel which is really disappointing since I wanted to get everything he has ever written to read it.

    "Terrible narration"
What would have made Crazy Rich Asians better?

The narration was stilted and did not match the time if the book.

Would you be willing to try another one of Lynn Chen’s performances?

    Not with the same narrator

    "Entertaining, Fun Listen"
If you could sum up Crazy Rich Asians in three words, what would they be?

    Worth the Credit!

What other book might you compare Crazy Rich Asians to and why?

This book is totally entertaining, and it is all about money, eye candy, jet setting and living LARGE! It's not deep but that's ok - it's entertaining, and the family dynamics among the crazy rich are interesting. I also liked the love story story between Rachel and Nick. I liked both characters and was rooting for them throughout the book. This book is a little like Devil Wears Prada in tone and absorption. Again, not deep but very very entertaining.

    Which scene was your favorite?

When Rachel Chu deals with the fish incident. She takes the high road and I admired her for dealing with the non stop backstabbing and gossip. She was the recipient of some serious mean girl action.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I really enjoyed this book - it's the perfect beach read type book.

    Any additional comments?

I hope to see more Kevin Kwan audio books in the future!

    "Irritating and Repetetive"
Is there anything you would change about this book?

Less exaggerated, shrieking asian female accents in the narration.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

About ten fewer anecdotes about the hideous things the crazy rich Asians do would have made the story less tedious and highlighted the better parts.

Was Crazy Rich Asians worth the listening time?

No. It might have been fun abridged.

    "Rich people"

Ignorance comes in ALL forms. It's your same 'ol story: two people from different worlds fall madly in love and the rich family doesn't approve. But, still this has new life in this story. So, it doesn't come off boring. It's actually very entertaining. The only problem was the ending, it just dropped. You build all this anticipation getting ready for the big climax and when your right there...nothing. Then your like S-O-B!! But, still a great read...or listen.

"I want to be a crazy asian"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes, I have not even finished it yet and I would recmmend it.

What did you like best about this story?

the story is varied and humorous. It kept my attention, I even backtracked to relisten and make sure that I got the story right with all the relationships. I read the reviews and was pretty hesitant to listen because of negative narration comments. But I fund i enjoyed the accents and different tones the narrator gave the characters.

Have you listened to any of Lynn Chen’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

    no

If you could rename Crazy Rich Asians, what would you call it?

    the title is perfect.

    Any additional comments?

give it a try it is definitely a good "listen".

    "Entertaining and hilarious!"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Kwan's story isn't deep, but he does a fabulous job creating and describing a multitude of idiosyncratic characters that keep the reader entertained. The story keeps a quick pace and doesn't take itself too seriously, which makes this a great weekend read or as in my case- listen over short periods during my commute to and from work. The narrator definitely adds to the flavor as there are so many characters, different accents and asian-dialect vocabulary to negotiate. She brings them to life, which is the key to this book.
