Publisher's summary

Comanche Moon completes Larry McMurtry's epic cycle of novels of the American West that began with the Pulitzer-Prize-winning masterpiece, Lonesome Dove.

We join Texas Rangers August McCrae and Woodrow F. Call as they are just beginning to deal with the perplexing tensions of adult life -- Gus, and his great love, Clara Forsythe, Call and Maggie Tilton, the young whore who loves him -- when they enlist with a Ranger troop in pursuit of Buffalo Hump, the great Comanche war chief; Kicking Wolf, the celebrated Comanche horse thief; and a deadly Mexican bandit king with a penchant for torture.

Comanche Moon joins the 20-year time line between Dead Man's Walk and Lonesome Dove, as we follow Gus, Call and their comrades-in-arms -- Deets, Jake Spoon, and Pea Eye Parker -- in their bitter struggle to protect an advancing Western frontier against the defiant Comanches, determined to defend their territory and way of life.

At once realistic and yet vividly imagined, Comanche Moon is a giant of an audiobook and the keystone to a mighty achievement of storytelling. An epic adventure full of heroism, tragedy, cruelty, courage, honor and betrayal, Comanche Moon is the culmination of Larry McMurtry's peerless vision of the American West.

Too much back story, narration issues.

Any additional comments?

I have enjoyed Lonesome Dove and Frank Muller's narration of other books, but this did not work as well for me on either part. I enjoyed the parts with new characters and the story of the travels into Mexico, but much of of the Lonesome Dove characters story consisted of back story explaining how they would act in the next part of the sequence. I have also enjoyed Frank Muller's narration on several other books, especially "Prince of Tides" and "Shawshank Redemption," but some characters on this one seemed a little cartoonish, and his portrayal of female characters seems over-reliant on falsetto vocal technique here.

Good, but too long...

I enjoyed this, but it felt long winded. If you liked the first book, you'll like this.

Solid read by Muller, though i would have preferred Will Patton.

Riveting

This is about as good a western tale as a reader is likely to find. If you have ever wondered about the adventurers of Gus and Call prior to Lonesome Dove, this is the audio book for you.

Lonesome Dove is the best but…

Lonesome Dove is the best of the series, and I loved The Streets of Laredo too. Dead Man Walking and Comanche Moon are entertaining and worth the read, but the bulk of the “best “ s in the first two books.

Great Conclusion to the Prequel of Call & McCrae

Comanche Moon brings a solid conclusion to the early years of Woodrow call and Augustus McCrae as the two companeros are now seasoned Texas Rangers who are desperately fighting to protect the Texas settlers in an ever expanding frontier from the likes of Buffalo Hump, Kicking Wolf, and the soon to be infamous Blue Duck, as well as dealing with their own personal problems with romance, duty, and an ever-changing world where Rangers may no longer be needed. On the opposite side we see an aging Buffalo Hump desperately trying to keep the Comanche together in a fast changing world that is slowly slipping away from them. This book is filled with the famous characters we have grown to love from Lonesome Dove and Dead Mans Walk, but also a slew of colorful support characters such as the eccentric Inish Scull, the ever inquisitive Kickapoo tracker Famous Shoes, and the new Texas Rangers troop members and future Hat Creek Cattle Company wranglers Pea Eye Parker, Joshua Deets, and Jake Spoon. We also get a glimpse into the relationship of Call and Newt far before the events of Lonesome Dove, which is both endearing and heartbreaking. This is a definite read for those who love revisionist westerns and Lonesome Dove.
