Publisher's summary

NOW A MAJOR MOTION PICTURE

One of the most acclaimed novels in recent memory, Charles Frazier's Cold Mountain is a masterpiece that is at once an enthralling adventure, a stirring love story, and a luminous evocation of a vanished American in all its savagery, solitude, and splendor. Sorely wounded and fatally disillusioned in the fighting at Petersburg, Inman, a Confederate soldier, decides to walk back to his home in the Blue Ridge Mountains and to Ada, the woman he loved there years before. His trek across the disintegrating South brings him into intimate and sometimes lethal converse with slaves and marauders, bounty hunters and witches, both helpful and malign. At the same time, Ada is trying to revive her father's derelict farm and learn to survive in a world where the old certainties have been swept away. As it interweaves their stories, Cold Mountain asserts itself as an authentic American Odyssey--hugely powerful, majestically lovely, and keenly moving.

Critic reviews

"Charles Frazier delivers a soulful reading of his novel....His writing reveals the fluidity of a storyteller, and the audiobook becomes a natural extension of his skill." (AudioFile)
"Charles Frazier has taken on a daunting task, and has done extraordinarily well by it....A Whitmanesque foray into America; into its hugeness, its freshness, its scope and its soul. Such a memorable book." (The New York Times Book Review)
"A rare and extraordinary book....Heart-stopping....Spellbinding." (San Francisco Chronicle)
"Novelists are never in short supply. Natural-born storytellers come along only rarely. Charles Frazier joins the ranks of that elite cadre on the first page of his astonishing debut." (Newsweek)

This book broke my heart when it ended.....

.....I was tormented by the ending and the fact that I was done reading the book made me so sad.........it is one of those rare and beautiful books that touches you deep in your soul and stays in your thoughts for a lifetime. Inman and Ada were truly a couple that makes romance and love and living life such a true touching and heartbreaking experience. I found myself laughing one minute and yelling out in shock and anger the next minute....the book left me in awe and breathless.....this will be a story that will live long in my mind and heart. Absolutely being placed in my 'Top 10' list.....

An Masterpiece-Charles narration was awesome!

There are some books in your life that qualify as "a masterpiece", these are stories that are written in a way that you will never forget and if someone asks you, what were your all-time favorite books, immediately you say, Cold Mountain, The Boys in the Boat, The Prince of Tides, Deep River, Indianapolis and A Prayer for Owen Meany. Then they ask you why, and you say, because they made me feel every emotion possible and I didn't want them to end. They are the ones that you feel grateful the author wrote them and you feel even more blessed to have taken the time to pick them up to read. My life is better for having read these.... That describes “a masterpiece". Charles Frazier read this Audible book and I will never forget it. One of the most awesome audible reads I have experienced. I had previously watched the movie and envisioning Ruby, Ada and Inman as their characters brought so much depth that will live on in my memory. I plan on re-reading this one many times over. I thank you Charles Frazier, thank you.

A tale of love and hope eternal .

A beautiful tale of the lives of two very different women from two vastly different class backgrounds. The relationship that was forged through the years of the American Civil War and far beyond by these two women. The celebration of the friendship and the bond for each other. Their trials and tribulations of their loves found, and loves lost.

Beautiful story

Sometimes books read by the author are not as good but the narration for Cold Mountain was perfect. This book was so descriptive and the character development incredible. I had seen the movie and knew the story but I loved the book far far more.

One of my favorite love stories

The story of love pulled apart by worldly circumstances is not a new story. But this one is told in such a beautiful way of longing, of daily uncertainty, of unknown endings, and what dreams can bring when you’re lonely..
the visuals described make you feel you are there.
One of my all time favorite stories and the book is so much better than the movie could depict.

Excellent writing.

The story is so well written, I was taken to every place the author wanted me. This story may not be for everyone, but being read by the author, with his slight accent, makes for a great listen. I could not wait to get to the end of this story. If only Charles Fraser would write another book.

One time the movie is better

I have enjoyed the movie for years and I did enjoy the book but it lacks the charm of the movie and the actors portrayals. It was nice to hear the author narrate his boom but he wasn’t the best at the narration

Pretty good but a bit of a snooze

I forced myself to finish this one. It was good enough but slow, so very slow.
