Publisher's summary

Code Name Verity is a compelling, emotionally rich story with universal themes of friendship and loyalty, heroism and bravery. Two young women from totally different backgrounds are thrown together during World War II: one a working-class girl from Manchester, the other a Scottish aristocrat, one a pilot, the other a wireless operator. Yet whenever their paths cross, they complement each other perfectly and before long become devoted friends. But then a vital mission goes wrong, and one of the friends has to bail out of a faulty plane over France. She is captured by the Gestapo and becomes a prisoner of war. The story begins in Verity's own words, as she writes her account for her captors.

Cue the ugly crying
"Fellow editor Emily recommended this one to me, and for that I will always be mad at her/eternally grateful. This is a gorgeous story of friendship during WWII that absolutely cracked my heart open—at one point I was crying so hard I had to pull over on the side of the ride. But please don’t let that deter you—it’s absolutely worth it."—Katie O., Audible Editor

Wonderful story, beautifully performed

Would you listen to Code Name Verity again? Why?

Possibly--though the suspense was a big aspect of the story.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Code Name Verity?

Descriptions of flying a damaged war plane--stunning visuals. Plus the gritty sense of WW II in Great Britain.

What does Morven Christie and Lucy Gaskell bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Perfect pacing. Also, their lovely accents really filled out the characters and made them real. It felt as though they had true connections with the characters. Their performances were rich and nuanced and soulful.

Any additional comments?

I wanted to give this book to my adult daughter, and was stunned to find it in the "Teen fiction" section--I never for a moment felt like it was written for a young audience; I can only think that it must have been a marketing decision.

Captivating Read

I loved this book...it was so well written with the story split between the two main characters and it flowed wonderfully. A heartfelt story of true friendship overlayed on the grim realities and horror of the Nazi occupation of France. The narration was top-notch and I really felt like I was there. Wonderful story.

Mesmerizing

I had no real expectations going in, but found this book wonderfully crafted, entertaining, at times, heartbreaking. I also found it educational and enlightening!

Different style...

Latest acquisition. A good read. It is, in some strange way, a bit disturbing. As the narrator jumps back and forth between timeframes, and characters… Wow! Makes me dizzy, occasionally. Liked it a lot.

A Great Listen

Who was your favorite character and why?

Julie was my favorite character. The first part of the book seemed to flow a lot better when "she" was narrating.

What about Morven Christie and Lucy Gaskell ’s performance did you like?

The different accents were great. She went from Scottish to English (with an American one thrown in as well!)

Any additional comments?

The plot seemed a little bit predictable, but the narration and story line were still very good and even though part of me knew how it was going to end, I still found myself listening intently.

Didn't Expect THAT!

Started out slow, but the more I listened the more interesting and complex this story of two women involved in WWII espionage became. And I clearly did not expect the ending.

Unconventional writing style

Took a while to get used to the first person note writing technique. Jury is still out...

Stunning and Devastating

Beautiful and heart-wrenching and oh-so-clever, this audiobook had me gasping out loud in public. It starts out slow but wraps itself around you like a python, stealing your breath away before you realize what's happened. It's a must-read.
