Publisher's summary

Code Name Verity is a compelling, emotionally rich story with universal themes of friendship and loyalty, heroism and bravery. Two young women from totally different backgrounds are thrown together during World War II: one a working-class girl from Manchester, the other a Scottish aristocrat, one a pilot, the other a wireless operator. Yet whenever their paths cross, they complement each other perfectly and before long become devoted friends. But then a vital mission goes wrong, and one of the friends has to bail out of a faulty plane over France. She is captured by the Gestapo and becomes a prisoner of war. The story begins in Verity's own words, as she writes her account for her captors.

Editor's Pick

Cue the ugly crying
"Fellow editor Emily recommended this one to me, and for that I will always be mad at her/eternally grateful. This is a gorgeous story of friendship during WWII that absolutely cracked my heart open—at one point I was crying so hard I had to pull over on the side of the ride. But please don’t let that deter you—it’s absolutely worth it."—Katie O., Audible Editor

Interesting story

It was a “page” turner. This genre always makes you appreciate the men and women who fought in WWII. It was fun to listen to a WWII about two women.

Haunting, Beautiful, Exquisite, Special Book

Other reviewers have outlined the plot, the story and what the reader/listener can expect to happen in this book. So I'll take a moment to say that I found this book to be one of those special novels that gets under your skin and stays with you. The two main characters, these best friends have such a special bond in a time in our history in a part of the world where atrocities were taking place daily. In spite of (or perhaps because of ?) these women were especially kind and brave and full of honor and grace. Imagine if we all could aspire to be such caring special human beings in the face of such horror. Bravo Ms. Wein. And equally special, the narrators brought these amazing characters to life just perfectly. This is a wonderful special book. A must listen.

Pay attention the first time

I listened to half this book, got confused, because I wasn't really paying attention and had to go back and start over. I am glad that I did or I would have missed a gem. This book was well written, great details and the author did not stereotype her characters, they were all multidimensional. It was hard to believe that the story was fiction. I liked the fact that 2 narrators were used, rather than one changing her accent, it made it less confusing. It's definately worth your time and credit

A Worthy Read

This book gave me a look at a period in history that I knew little about. I enjoyed every minute.

Edge of your seat historical fiction

Read this as recommended fiction for high school and above. Most students these days aren't exposed to much world history. What a shame. I will make certain my freshman granddaughter listens to this one it was wonderful

Fantastic!

Where does Code Name Verity rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Honestly the performance was artful. I don't think I have ever been so sucked into a story just because of the narrators. The story was fantastic as well. I loved it!

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

A record of two best friends (girls) fighting in World War 2.

A Heartbreaking and Haunting Story of Heroism

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

The narrators, particularly "Verity's" were thrilling to listen to. Wry, witty, emotionally compelling and complex. This is an absolute must listen.

Wow. My life is different after this story.

Any additional comments?

How deep is your courage and commitment to the ideals and values you stand for? What if the threat of the invasion of your homeland challenged you to stand up for those ideals, even if it put you in the way of serious harm? Even if you might fall into the hands of the enemy?

This is a riveting, moving and sometimes shocking story. Even though it is fiction, it is compellingly drawn from the true stories of those who stepped forward to do everything they knew they could to protect their country's freedom.

The narrator has a beautiful voice that is perfect for each character, particularly the females.

There is graphic violence and torture that could be a bit rough for young and/or sensitive readers. But those intervals do not dominate the book.

boring

Thought there would be more action. The 3rd person style of writing did not do this book justice. I wouldn't waste a credit

Awesome Historical Fiction

Awesome book . . . this is historical fiction at its best. I don't want to spoil the story for other readers, so I will not be saying much. This is the kind of book that kept me thinking about it when I wasn't reading. It got me thinking about current issues as well as contemplating the bravery and treachery of people in another time and place. It brought me to tears, helped me view beauty and ugliness, and made me smile at remembered friendship.

The only thing I would change is if I had known how often Wein could make the reader want to reread sections, I would have chosen a kindle edition rather than a recorded book. I would have missed some very good narration, but I could have flipped back a few pages to puzzle about what was really happening.
