Publisher's summary

Code Name Verity is a compelling, emotionally rich story with universal themes of friendship and loyalty, heroism and bravery. Two young women from totally different backgrounds are thrown together during World War II: one a working-class girl from Manchester, the other a Scottish aristocrat, one a pilot, the other a wireless operator. Yet whenever their paths cross, they complement each other perfectly and before long become devoted friends. But then a vital mission goes wrong, and one of the friends has to bail out of a faulty plane over France. She is captured by the Gestapo and becomes a prisoner of war. The story begins in Verity's own words, as she writes her account for her captors.

Editor's Pick

Cue the ugly crying
"Fellow editor Emily recommended this one to me, and for that I will always be mad at her/eternally grateful. This is a gorgeous story of friendship during WWII that absolutely cracked my heart open—at one point I was crying so hard I had to pull over on the side of the ride. But please don’t let that deter you—it’s absolutely worth it."—Katie O., Audible Editor

Powerful

Incredible story of women as spies and piilots in World War II. The narration makes it so real.

Well told and put together. Exciting ride

Well told. I'm a big fan of the found letters type format to piece together a story, and this was a great execution of it. Plausible story in the lines of a historical piece, but done in a way where it's obviously a fiction. To me, I think that's smart... there's not a distraction of feeling like facts don't line up with well known events. You can focus on the story.

All-time favorite audiobook

I listened to this audiobook and immediately restarted it. It’s the story of two young women in London during World War II. One is a pilot, and one becomes a spy. It tells what happens when they fly over France. However, it’s truly a story about friendship and two remarkable heroines. It’s the number one book that I recommend to pretty much everyone I know. I didn’t even realize it was categorized as young adult book when I first heard it. Later, I read a review that said it was the best young adult book, if not the best book, the year it was written. Highly recommend.

A Favourite audiobook!

This book is good enough to be listened to several times!
Even when you are aware of the twists and surprises of the storyline, you are pulled into the story again. The main performer is particularly good!

Riveting

This was the best narration of any audiobook I’ve heard. The story was excellent, and the narrators, especially the Scot, added so much emotion and depth to the words on the page. Highly recommended.

Great Audiobook!

I loved the story. The author did a great job of using two narrators to tell the same story. Instead of flip-flopping between narrators every chapter (as is common when using this technique) the author does not present the second narrator until the second half of the book.

I also liked the subject matter - women who risked their lives for their countries during WWII. Since women were not officially allowed in “combat” though, their stories often go untold.

The performances in this audiobook were some of the best I’ve listened to. Every character was brought to life. Brilliant job!

POSSIBLE SPOILER ALERT:
One of my favorite things about this story was the revelation near the end that one of the stories was told by an unreliable narrator. But unlike most unreliable narrators, realizing her story was untrue makes you love this character. And discovering why she told a false story proved she was a brilliant & brave patriot to the end.

A Must Read

This is a rare book that will stick with you long after you have finished. And while listening, you will find yourself laughing, crying, cheering, squirming, cringing, and sighing with relief. The subject matter is horrifying enough. Don't think about it. Just read and listen (excellent narration) and enjoy.
