In the small Irish town of Knockglen, best friends Bernadette ('Benny') and Eve are inseparable. Benny is an adored only child, and Eve a poor, birdlike orphan brought up by nuns.

On their first day at University College, Dublin, a fatal road accident brings the pair together with fellow students Nan Mahon and Jack Foley, and new friendships are quickly struck. all the characters were unique but Benny of course stole the show and her friendship with Eve.

the abrupt ending left me a tad disappointed would have liked to know what happened between Jack and Benny just love a happy ending. I enjoyed the story so much that I did not want it to end there. it just begged for a sequel.

Up there with the classics

I love this story. It has to be my favourite Binchy novel. The narration is wonderful - totally engaging. I don't need to say anymore about it. It's brilliant!
