Publisher's summary

In the year 1912, 19-year-old Christy Huddleston leaves home to teach school in the Smoky Mountains – and comes to know and love the resilient people of the region, with their fierce pride, their dark superstitions, their terrible poverty, and their yearning for beauty and truth. But her faith will be severely challenged by trial and tragedy, by the needs and unique strengths of two remarkable young men, and by a heart torn between true love and unwavering devotion. And don't miss another heart-soaring best seller from Catherine Marshall: Julie.

Critic reviews

"First released in 1967, Christy is based on the life of author Catherine Marshall's mother and was the inspiration for the recent television series of the same name. Beautifully told, this is a charming, timeless tale of love and faith that will appeal to romance readers of all ages." (Amazon.com review)

Nostalgic…

I absolutely adored the brief “Christy” series growing up. I was exited to see that the actress who played Christy (Kellie Martin) narrated this book. However, I wouldn’t call it narrating, more just reading. While it wasn’t unpleasant, she definitely didn’t make the characters unique or in some places, even identifiable. With that said, the nostalgia of having the same Christy I grew up watching read this book made it endearing to me. It was a wonderful story and I loved the end, it leaves me wishing for more!

A True Favorite

Christy is one of my favorite books, one I loved as a teenager, as a young woman, and now as a grandmother. The characters are interesting, unusual, growing and developing as the plot unfolds. The story itself takes many twists and turns, bringing tears, laughter, and inspiration. This performance, too, was excellent, bringing the story to life. I loved everything about this Audible book!

God is so amazing!

The ‘realness’ of a time when people actually had to deal with things instead of passing them off to others to deal with. She speaks about the Holy Spirit in a way only one who is endwelled with Him can. It’s refreshing to hear Him and His ways being spoken of. May God bless Jean Billman who gave me her ancient copy of this and several other of Catherine Marshall’s books. The pages were so brown with age that I opted for the audible version so my daughter and I could listen to them as we knit items to be entered into this years local fair. I am sure we will listen to this story again. Thanks again, my dear sister in Christ, Jean.

One of the greatest books of all time!

What did you love best about Christy?

I have read this book about 4 times since I was a teenager. Now I'm in my fifties and I love it just as much as the first time I read it. Listening to the story is even better. You feel as if you are really there with Christy as she lived that time in her life. It is a very compassionate and loving story revealing the way of life in the appalachian mountains in the early 1900's. It is a very enjoyable and spiritual Christian story that takes you through many emotions as felt by Christy and the other individuals she meets in the story.

Who was your favorite character and why?

I love Christy for her youthfulness, excitement, vision, eagerness, vitality, innocence, and bravery.

Have you listened to any of Kellie Martin’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Kellie Martin's narration of this book is terrific! I remember her when she played Christy on television and she played the role very believably. Her voice was very clear and it was very easy to follow the story and to distinguish the difference in each character. She was able to create the emotions felt by each character.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

When you read this book you experience various emotions, including: love, hate, disgust, admiration, compassion, etc. It is very difficult to put the book down and I was sad to have the story end. I wanted to go on and on finding out what else was happening to and around Christy.

Any additional comments?

I recommend this book to everyone! A one time read is not enough. It's an enjoyable story for teenagers through older adults.

I enjoyed most all moments of the book.I loved how she interacted with the children, how she eventually fit in with the women and learned the mountain folk ways.

timeless

This is a timeless, encouraging story that I have always loved. I wondered about the reader since I am not a fan of hers but she did justice to the book, to the story and the characters. I was there, in the area with her, seeing the people, the landscape and beauty.

Love/Hate

I am in a love hate relationship with this book. I absolutely love the narration, and the story, and I love who Christy ends up with, but I absolutely hate how it ends! I desperately want to know more and of course there is no sequel!
