Publisher's summary

In the year 1912, 19-year-old Christy Huddleston leaves home to teach school in the Smoky Mountains – and comes to know and love the resilient people of the region, with their fierce pride, their dark superstitions, their terrible poverty, and their yearning for beauty and truth. But her faith will be severely challenged by trial and tragedy, by the needs and unique strengths of two remarkable young men, and by a heart torn between true love and unwavering devotion. And don't miss another heart-soaring best seller from Catherine Marshall: Julie.

This is the book that 45 years ago made me want to be a teacher

I love this book! So many lessons and I have read it so many times! Yet listening to it made some things stand out that I didn’t remember in my multiple readings! Thank you!! I am retiring from a 39 year teaching career in June and I still love the book and love teaching!!!

Insightful and Romantic

Any additional comments?

This audiobook has a lot to offer. As literature, 'Christy' well-deserved the popularity that it won at the time of original publication -- it was a best-seller. The narration of this audio production was certainly well-done, with an actress who had spent several years portraying the story's main character on television. And this production contained a welcome surprise: an interview with the son of Author Catherine Marshall (and grandson of the "real" Christy). The interview shed light on how much of the book is actually based on real events.

'Christy' tells the story of a young woman who wants to "do something with her life". It chronicles the growing that comes as a matter of course as young idealists learn the resilience required to become effective makers of change in society.

'Christy' also makes a mature and nuanced exploration of the Christian "conversion" process. Can a perfectly good God really exist when he allows so much death, suffering, neglect and violence? How can I possibly love people who are willfully ignorant, cruel, and selfish? Where is God? And why, when we're trying to serve him, must we suffer?

'Christy' is a long book, but certainly enjoyable throughout. It has a strong, unique story, extreme characters, and far-reaching questions. I found it to be a challenging and ultimately uplifting novel that has aged very well.

Amazing narration for an amazing story

If you loved Kellie Martin in the TV series then you'll love this book. Her voice is calm and soothing and she does the Appalachian accent so well!

Random ending

I loved the story and the narrator did super job but the ending was kinda weird... Like she wakes up and it's the end... Oh well... Wish there was a sequel like how long she taught the school and how long the typhoid lasted ect...

a classic favorite with a perfect narrator

I read this book a long time ago and decided it would be a good road trip companion when I saw it was narrated by Kellie Martin. Her portrayal of Christy on TV was so good that I knew this was be great. I loved once again hearing her voice as Christy. This will always be one of my favorite books. It combines so many of my passions: missions, teaching, and children. I don't think I've ever read a more beautiful book.
