Enjoyable - but not one of Mary Kay Andrews' best

I have become a big Mary Kay Andrews fan, and while I enjoyed CHRISTMAS BLISS, I finished this latest effort with some measure of disappointment.

Weezie Foley and crew are definitely my favorite characters out of all of Andrews' excellent books, and I was very much looking forward to another installment. Andrews usually provides interesting twists and turns, sometimes to the point of pain, but I found CHRISTMAS BLISS entirely too predictable. I found myself seeing each twist's outcome pretty much as soon as it was introduced, and feeling disappointed that I was right. I was hoping for the unexpected, and I didn't find it in this tale. There were also scenes that seemed contrived, almost shoehorned into the story (trying to avoid spoilers here - but I will mention the party Merijoy Rucker threw for BeBe) and didn't seem to flow organically. It almost seemed as if some favorite old character needed a cameo, or that someone had told funny stories about such parties and it somehow needed to be fit in.

And to be honest, I just don't like this new narrator. I could have gotten used to the new voices, although they seemed too cutesy for the characters, particularly Weezie, if McInerney had just used the same pronunciations the previous narrator Isabel Keating had for consistency. Every time she said "BeeBee" instead of "BayBay", I found myself grinding my teeth -- also the change to the surname Stepanik. I almost didn't recognize the word when she said Buleigh. Perhaps these were the pronunciations the author had in mind, but when you have existing audiobooks in the same milieu, it seems logical to try to keep at least some consistency if you plan to change narrators.

Don't get me wrong -- CHRISTMAS BLISS was a fun listen, and well worth the money spent on it. It's just not a favorite. It would have been better if they'd gotten the original narrator for the audiobook, though it still doesn't address some of the predictability.

Finally a good narrator

I loved all of the Weezie and BeBe books but this is the first one to which I enjoyed listening. The characters don't sound as cartoonish as in the past books and Weezie and BeBe sound less harsh and edgy, more "steel magnolia" like I imagined they would.

Another enjoyable episode of Bebe & Weezy

I love Mary Kay Andrews - always download one of her books when I want to listen to something that I can not only identify with and also that I know will make me laugh out loud.

New York at Christmas time is magical and this was captured in the book.

What about Kathleen McInerney’s performance did you like?

I've listened to so many MKA books and love this performer.

Who was the most memorable character of Christmas Bliss and why?

Weezy always steals the show but BeBe really was the most memorable in that she had the most transition and personal growth.

narrator made characters sound weak and whiny.

I loved the first three books read by Isabel, she made tge character strong, sassy, independent business woman. kathleen spoiled the book for me completely, making Wheezy sound whiney and Bebe sound weak. really disappointed.

Christmas baby!

I love the Bebe and Weezie stories. I would have like a little more mystery but it was perfect nonetheless.

Totally my own fault

So I realized recently after I listened to this books prequel with a different reader. It’s her voice, I don’t mind the cheesy stuff that happens in the book-it’s fluff for fun. Kathleen McInerney makes the female character sound like brainless idiots with all of her hesitations and breathiness. I realized that whenever I annoyed by a book a characters it is often this narrator. If you enjoy her you will enjoy the book. If, like me, you find her performances frustrating I suggest not purchasing this book and just reading it instead. Please understand I am sure she is a lovely narrator but not for me.

Not one of the better ones

Savannah Blues’s narrator was so much better. The personality she gave Weezie and Bebe were so much better than Christmas Bliss narrator. Characters seemed whiny and weak. MKAndrews’s stories are always fun but this audio version was lacking.

Lighthearted fun

Great to continue the story of the Savanah ladies. Lighthearted and fun with twists along the way. I listen to Blue Christmas every year as an annual tradition. Love that this added to the story line. My only complaint is a few details about NYC… a little less then realistic. But the author did get the massive NYC slush puddles precisely right.
