Publisher's summary

In this #1 New York Times bestseller, Nora Roberts delves into the world of elite firefighters who thrive on danger and adrenaline—men and women who wouldn’t know how to live life if it wasn’t on the edge.

Little else in life is as dangerous as fire jumping. Flying past towering pillars of smoke, parachuting down to the edge of an all-consuming blaze, shoveling and sawing for hours upon hours, days at a time, all to hold the line and push back against the raw power of Mother Nature.

But there’s also little else as thrilling - at least to Rowan Tripp. The Missoula smoke jumpers are one of the most exclusive firefighting squads in the nation, and the job is in Rowan’s blood: her father is a legend in the field. She’s been fighting fires since her eighteenth birthday. At this point, returning to the wilds of Montana for the season feels like coming home - even with reminders of the partner she lost last season still lingering in the air.

Fortunately, this year’s rookie crop is among the strongest ever - and Gulliver Curry’s one of the best. He’s also a walking contradiction, a hotshot firefighter with a big vocabulary and a winter job at a kids’ arcade. He came to Missoula to follow in the footsteps of Lucas “Iron Man” Tripp, yet he’s instantly more fascinated by his hero’s daughter. Rowan, as a rule, doesn’t hook up with other smoke jumpers, but Gull is convinced he can change her mind. And damn if he doesn’t make a good case to be an exception to the rule.

Everything is thrown off balance, though, when a dark presence lashes out against Rowan, looking to blame someone for last year’s tragedy. Rowan knows she can’t complicate things with Gull - any distractions in the air or on the ground could be lethal. But if she doesn’t find someone she can lean on when the heat gets intense, her life may go down in flames.

Chasing Fire

Any additional comments?

Read by Rebecca Lowman, 15 hours of listening. Chasing Fire is about exactly what you’d think, smoke jumpers. The lead character is the daughter of an industry legend, and takes after her father, i.e., smoke jumping is her calling. Woven into the plot is the requisite ruggedly handsome leading man, jealously, the sabotage of life-saving equipment, murder, and a myriad of colorful secondary characters. You may suspect several of the characters, but may also figure out this who-done-it long before the finale. Some terrific fire-battling/hair-raising scenes, typical Nora Roberts come-here-get-away-come here-get-away romance that is on occasion as steamy as the fires. Although I’m no expert in fire-fighting, there seemed to be nice research of equipment and procedure. It all came across as realistic smoke jumping, a career not for everybody.

This is my second listen of Rebecca Lowman, the first being a Sparks romance, Safe Haven. She’s good. Flirty and sexy when needed, with a credible delivery of a type A male.

I purchased Chasing Fire via an Audible Daily Deal, but if you’re a fan of Nora Roberts, it would be well worth a credit. Enjoy!

A break from The Formula...didn't like it

This book had a lot of potential and could have been another entertaining Roberts romance to help keep my mind off things like cleaning and rush-hour traffic. However, I did not like that the main male and female characters were a couple right off the bat. Yes, I can understand that she wanted to break from the same formula of virtually every other book she's written, but I have come to appreciate that. The information on how the firefighters train is very interesting and admirable.

this was okay but not her best work

the story was okay, narrator did a decent job but I just did not fall in love with the story like I usually do with Nora Roberts. The romance was lacking as well.

Mucho Queso

I felt bloated from all the cheesy scenes and dialogue in this story. And, I like a strong female character but she is like the bionic woman. She should be trying out for the SEAL's instead of fighting fires. Speaking of, the fire fighting scenes were becoming repetitive and unrealistic. These characters are being flown into multiple states (Missoula, Alaska, etc) and she has them either fighting fires or sitting around lifting weights, running or eating. Smoke jumpers don't do that. They cover one designated area and when there are no fires in said area they have other duties they tend to (forestry, disaster relief, etc). She could have pulled some of that into the story to change it up.

This story is a little too unrealistic and cheesy for me.

Mystery

This Mystery was awesome but I had good idea of who was doing the crime before the climax came up in the book. It was just like I was there inside the book going through the motions with the characters it was awesome cannot wait to read another book.
