Publisher's summary

Ryan Havens appears to be a cowboy who's down on his luck. He's angry, frustrated and looking for a fight when he meets Erica Smyth. She's a barmaid with limited skills who has two drunken brothers harassing her. Ryan comes to her rescue, but the ensuing brawl leaves him injured and her jobless. They reluctantly agree to work together and share expenses for the next few weeks. What neither of them wants the other to know is their true identity. Each plays the part of a chameleon, constantly changing as the situation demands.

Their relationship undergoes many changes, beginning with prickly animosity and growing into a deep, sensual love affair. Now all they have to worry about is the truth.

5 Hearts - These two stubborn individuals are very well matched in energy, enthusiasm, sensuality, intelligence and wicked humor. The relationship evolving between them is so very hot and beautifully written by Ms. Barker.

Great Book!

Any additional comments?

This is a great book written by Becky Barker and narrated by Johnny Peppers. This book has a wonderful story and well developed characters. This book will keep you reading long into the night. This was such a great read and full of surprises. Ryan Havens appears to be a cowboy who's down on his luck. He's angry, frustrated and looking for a fight when he meets Erica Smyth. The narrator Johnny Peppers did a wonderful job with this book. He did a great job with the different voices of each character in this book. It was very easy to listen to and I didn’t want to stop listening until the end.

If you are looking for a great book with well-developed characters then you need to listen to this book. I am looking forward to listening to the next book by this author and narrator.

Not quite enough!

I normally thoroughly enjoy Becky Barker's books since they are uplifting, lovely and make me smile. Chameleons didn't have that same effect on me. The premise is wonderful and all of the characters are realistic, but I was left with a little "is that all there is" at the end. Erica fled her high-powered corporate job in Chicago and the pressure of having to work with her father (and his archaic ideas), and found herself work as a barmaid in Wyoming. Ryan is a good-hearted, caring cowboy who hates bullies and he gets to know Erica when he saves her from the two "bar bullies." What happens after that is a story of forced proximity that felt anything but forced! This would be a 5 star read if it weren't for two things. First of all, there's no real definite description of who Katlyn is to Ryan, although it's said that she's the only woman he's ever loved. Later on, he never loved her "like that." Even later, he loved her as a friend. What the what? It's a major source of angst for Erica and I never really trusted what Ryan really felt. Secondly, Ryan is a horrible jerk when he finds out that (oh, no!) Erica knew who he was! What did you expect, Ryan, when you hid your real identity from her! Once he pulled a Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and was all in with falling in love, the story just quit. The ending is rushed and It cries for an epilogue.
The narration is very well done by Johnny Peppers. His well-modulated voice gave each character a distinct identity and personality.
