This book really brought home to me what a good writer Anne Tyler is. People may well find the central characters exasperating - which they are - but Tyler's gift is to make them believable and sympathetic in spite of everything. They are simply two people who are trying to make the best of life in spite of their circumstances and their own character flaws, which really just makes them like all the rest of us.
