    "AWFUL"

I don't even know where to begin... It is boring, shallow, stupid characters, non-existent plot, and some long, extensive mind numbing, offensive passages about "who would do who or who would do what " sexually, with beastiality and whatever offensive nonsense the author could throw in to try to get a rise out of the audience. Tragically bad. The dialogue is ridiculous and boring, and the characters are stupid and unbelievable and not well established in any way.... the story meanders forever before anything happens with lots of stupid commentary via the characters about today's culture.... The story is based on reality tv survivor shows, all of which are vastly superior to this depiction of it, though I have never paid a lot of attention. Over 2 hours in to it and no real plot or characters have been established, and some really ugly, stupid, offensive stuff is exposed. The author tries to tap into the cheapest, stupedist parts of popular culture to capitalize on them and does a terrible job of it - makes the survivor show look brilliant by comparison.

I have bought hundreds of books from audible and this is truly the very first time I felt I want my money back.

It was utterly dire, offensive, and boring. Kids write more interesting stories than this. Staring at paint drying is better than this. No real thought was put in to it, and it is cheap and lazy and stupid and offensive.

Save your money, save your credit....

    ""B-Movie" Horror Tale"

This is one of his 'mutant/monstrous outsiders' who rape and kill sort of books, who's formula is similar in many way to 'Ghoul' and 'Urban Gothic' (though both of those are superior novels to this).

Brian does a fair job of setting up a believable 'survivor' reality TV show setting complete with the sort of people you find in such programming- and then mixes it in with his creatures. However he dramatically lessens the effectiveness of his horror story by adding a few paragraphs from the creatures perspective early on in the book which effectively diffuses the tension and mystery with an early creature reveal. From then on its a B Movie 'by the numbers' sort of story. Most of the horror isn't tension but either gross out or uncomfortable graphic scenes of a sexual nature.

To his credit Brian does throw in a few surprises, and has some interesting characters I grew to like. His reality TV show portrayal is accurate and believable. ( I've actually been on a reality TV show so I can vouch for how that aspect felt right) I grew to sympathize with the characters plight and wanted to see what happened to them, "B movie" story telling and all.

"Starts off slow but worth the wait"

This one surprised me as it was the 2nd Brian Keene book I listened to.
The first was City of the Dead which was nothing like I was lead to believe in the description and really dissapointed me. The only reason I listened to it was because it was purchased during a sale along with City of the Dead. Anyway, Castaways starts off a little slow but picks up at a great pace and turns into a real nail biter! 4 out of 5 stars from me.

    "Couldn't finish it :("

Brian Keene is a difficult one for me. I've loved some of his stuff and hated others. I guess in this one I just didn't care enough about the characters to bother hanging on to find out who made it and who didn't...
I've actually tried reading the actual hard copy book, but I didn't finish it, either, so it didn't have anything to do with the narrator. I think I actually made it further with the audiobook.
