Publisher's summary

New York Times best-selling novelist Nora Roberts captivates millions of fans with her provocative blend of scorching passion and chilling suspense. With Carnal Innocence, she creates a gripping tale of murder, infatuation, and true love in a small southern town. After beautiful concert violinist Caroline Waverly breaks up with her conductor and lover Luis, she escapes to her late grandmother’s home in Innocence, Mississippi. Instead of peace and tranquility, however, she finds the town torn with suspicion over two brutal murders. When she discovers a third victim in the murky waters behind her house, she turns to her dangerously handsome neighbor, Tucker Longstreet, for protection. But Tucker has a reputation for breaking hearts - even worse, the police count him their number one suspect.

You’ll want to lean back in your easy chair and let Nora Robert’s steamy prose and Tom Stechschulte’s stirring interpretation transport you to Innocence where the nights are filled with promise and secrets are hard to keep.

The wait has ended

Where does Carnal Innocence rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

this is one of Nora Roberts all time great ones.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Tucker Longstreet, his zest of life.

Have you listened to any of Tom Stechschulte’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

he is not the best reader, but he grows on you. Carolyn McCormick did the abridged version and she always does a great job.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Don't cross the line!

Any additional comments?

I have waited 10 years for this full length version to be converted to download.

Wow...really good with lots of twists and turns

Let me say, that I have just recently started listening to several Nora Roberts books. I'm truly impressed. The narrator is excellent and the twists and turns in this book are exceptional. The person who you think may have done it, didn't! You never have a clue as to who really "done did it" (smile). I really liked this audio and would highly recommend it not ony for the romance which is not over the top (don't like too syrupy) but would recommend this for the good mystery writing.

Twists and turns galore

In this story Caroline is a musician that was forced to grow up to fast, she learned the importance of responsibility at a very young age. Tucker has grown up in a wealthy family filled with quirks, he is lazy and loves it. Caroline moves back to her grandparents home after a breakdown and falls in love with the town and learns to cherish the people. Unfortunately, the easy life changes when a serial killer starts killing young women of the town. This story has lots of twists and turns, almost to many. It was a little overwhelming that so many events seemed to happen. I didn't care for it as much as some other mysteries by Sandra Brown but for Nora Roberts it was good. Not my romance or much detail in the love scenes but it was good it you like a wholesome mystery with lots of plot and a happily ever after, and lets face it who doesn't ;) !

Well done romantic mystery suspense.

I was engaged all the way through. Wonderful character creation. Wonderful dialogue. Various conflicts are well done.

An example of fun dialogue: Tucker is this slow talking rich southern man who sleeps with a lot of women. Heroine is not interested. He makes a seductive comment to her. She says “You’re sick.” He replies “I do feel a fever comin’ on.”

I loved the way clues and things came out gradually during the book - like the clue someone saw that led them to discover who tampered with a car. I loved Tucker’s relationship with a teenage boy -- heartwarming.

AUDIOBOOK NARRATOR:
I recently heard Judith Ivey doing a southern accent that was irritating. Tom Stechschulte (this audiobook narrator) did a wonderful southern accent. And he was soooo sexy as Tucker. Wow. And he did women well - no effeminate gay guy sounds. He did so many different voices well. He’s now one of my favorite narrators.

Genre: romantic mystery suspense

Love the unabridged version

I'm so glad you added this version. The narrator is excellent (so much better than the one used for the abridged version!). He just makes the story and the characters come alive. It's one of my favorite NR books. Thanks!

Surprise!

Would you listen to Carnal Innocence again? Why?

Yes. I like all of the Nora Roberts books that I've listened to. There are enough twists that it's not a straight line to the ending like some books. I was very surprised at the ending.

What did you like best about this story?

That although there was some predictability, the ending wasn't what I'd expected.

Have you listened to any of Tom Stechschulte’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I haven't listened to any of his work that I'm aware of. I would have no problem with him being the narrator. He did a very good job. Enough difference so I could tell which character was suppose to be speaking.

Who was the most memorable character of Carnal Innocence and why?

I think it was a toss up between the two main characters, Tucker and Caroline. Tucker, because I really didn't want to like him since he seemed to think of women as interchangeable for his purposes. I did end up liking the character as the book started to show more depth of character.
Caroline because she finally started to show some backbone and became more of her own person rather than what was chosen for her.

Any additional comments?

If you can, get the unabridged version. It's much better.

An enjoyable listen, but slow at first.

[no spoilers, promise] I almost deleted this after the first chapter, but glad I gave it a chance. The first chapter had me all jumbled because of so many character introductions, but after that, I got drawn into the story, went back to the beginning to clear things up, then thoroughly enjoyed the rest. The narrator butchered some of the accents, by drawing them out too long and making them sound like they were mentally disabled. But he also read the conversations very well, making me feel like I was within the story. It was fun trying to guess who the killer was, and even when I finally figured it out, I kept doubting until it was brought out at the end. I also liked the romance part of it too. The story ended too soon for me, even though at some points I was going nuts with all the extra details the author added, but I'm glad I listened to this.
