Publisher's summary

Winner of the 2001 Christy Award, Lynn Austin captures the turmoil of the Civil War in this stirring novel. From vast plantations to the cramped closets of the Underground Railroad, it follows one young woman's inspiring journey of risk and sacrifice.

Caroline Fletcher, the daughter of a wealthy family in Richmond, has never questioned her father's right to own slaves. But after a lengthy visit to her uncle's home in Boston, she learns of the abolitionist movement. Now, knowing that slavery is against God's will, she must risk betraying the people she loves to obey her convictions.

Compelling characters and the searing conflicts between North and South create a vivid canvas for Caroline's struggle to make the right decisions. Through Christina Moore's hearfelt narration, Candle in the Darkness burns even brighter.

Awesome Story

I haven't checked all the historical accuracy but Lynn Austin made me believe I was a resident of Richmond, Virginia, during the Civil War. Austin also made me want to know more.

Christina Moore gave an outstanding performance.

Great Story, Narrated wonderfully!

The story brought me to tears, it touched my heart and warmed my soul. Lynn Austin is an excellent author. she is wonderful at painting the picture. This book is about faith, love, and human perseverance during some of the darkest times in US history. The narrator was excellent. I highly recommend reading this book or listening to this book. I actually own all of the books from this series in paper back however I wanted to hear the story from someone else and Christina Moore did not disappoint.

Excellently told, Engaging story

I loved the narrator’s voice, her ability to affect a southern accent, a male voice, and speak like people of that era and place. The story itself was fascinating and thought provoking. As always, the Bible woven into the story is one of the best parts.

A Beautifully complex story

I absolutely loved this story. The characters became so real to me. The complex issues that both the north and south faced in the Civil War gave me a lot to think about. This book gave me the opportunity to step back in time and experience living through the Civil War myself.
