Publisher's summary

New York Times best-selling author Colleen McCullough re-creates an extraordinary epoch before the mighty Republic belonged to Julius Caesar when Rome's noblewomen were his greatest conquest.

His victories were legend in battle and bedchamber alike. Love was a political weapon he wielded cunningly and ruthlessly in his private war against enemies in the forum. Genius, general, patrician, Gaius Julius Caesar was history. His wives bought him influence. He sacrificed his beloved daughter on the altar of ambition. He burned for the cold-hearted mistress he could never dare trust. Caesar's women all knew and feared his power. He adored them, used them, destroyed them on his irresistible rise to prominence. And one of them would seal his fate.

Abridged? What a waste.

The author is a great storyteller and the content is compelling as it covers some of the most interesting people in an intense time period. That said, the fact that all these books are abridged is incredibly disappointing.

NEVER buy an abridged McCullough novel!!!

Shame on Audible for even thinking of selling this audiobook!!!

The abridgement COMPLETELY destroys McCullough's outstanding work.

I have read her entire ROME series several times, and gave it to our son who enjoyed it equally. It is a Masterpiece of Scholarship and fictional skill...

The abridgement, however, is practically a Crime Against Humanity. Imagine lacerating the Mona Lisa with a knife, or taking a hammer to Michelangelo's David. This is what Audible has done here..

Do yourself a favor: Don't buy this book! And if you just have, try and get your money back!!

Wish there was more.

I loved the story. The only fault, in my opinion, was that it was abridged. I would have liked to have spent more time with the characters and their machinations. Michael York was great as the narrator. I'm definitely looking for more that he has done.

A little embarassing...

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

As it is part of a series and tells a complex and engaging story it can't be left out. I found some of the scenes of Caesar's prowess with women unnecessary. I listen to it out loud, in the kitchen while cooking and there were times I actually wanted to lower the volume.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

I don't need to be titillated by a book on ancient Rome so I would take that down a notch or two.

What does Michael York bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

He gives them individual voices and does it well.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

No.

Any additional comments?

This is one book I didn't mind being abridged. If they left in all the sex scenes, it is possible, however, that the abridgement threw off the balance.

Believable characters

It was interesting to deduce where factual history left off and imagination began. Good read.

Excellent Adaptation

This is an excellent adaptation of a wonderful book. Even though it was abridged, it felt complete.

As Always, McCullough Brings Ancient Rome Home

Beautifully written, greatly researched, Colleen McCullough masters the art of life, Roman style. As fascinating as life was back then, for the powerful, a woman’s place is much freer and less controlled now. It’s a good reminder as to how far women have come. Rome was a dangerous place!

I wish they had the October horse because it is the next to the last book in the series
