The family sets out across the plains in search of him, encountering grizzly bears, stormy weather, and hostile Indians as they go. With them are Shay's siblings G.T., Neva, and Baby Marcy, Shay's uncle Seth, his Granpa Crackenthorpe, and Mary Margaret's beautiful half-sister Rose. During their journey they pick up a bare-footed priest named Father Villy, and a Snake Indian named Charlie Seven Days, and persuade them to come along.
Boone's Lick is high adventure, a perfect Western tale and a moving love story - it is vintage McMurtry, combining his brilliant character portraits, his unerring sense of the West and his unrivalled eye for the telling detail.

"A zany performance of a zany story." (AudioFile)
Larry McMurtry is one of my favorite authors, and this book doesn't disappoint. The characters were endearing and the story absorbing and in a true McMurtry way, sometimes shocking. I highly recommend it.
Nevertheless, this is a fine offering. Read by my favorite audiobook reader, Will Patton, and written by one of my favorite authors, Larry McMurtry, this novel was a good time!
Both voracious readers, my husband suggested that I might like Larry McMurtry's books; he was right as usual. I chose Boone's Lick to start because as an audio-book addict, I especially like to listen to the brilliant narration of Will Patton (check out his other works as he is the best narrator I listen to....) Boone's Lick captured my interest from the beginning as McMurtry's characters are engaging and intriguing. Patton brings each to life with their unique personalities as he gives a distinctive voice to every character. I can't wait to listen to more McMurtry and will keep looking for Patton's narrations.
Lonesome Dove this book is not. It is okay, pretty good, but not great. The story was good enough that it shocked me to find myself already at the end of the book, but it was such an abrupt ending... seemed there should have been more to the story.
Say something about yourself!
another great western story.. worth the credit. sadness and adventure all in one. just the way i like them
All of McMurtry's books are written to transport the reader into the tale. Boone's Lick is no exception. While the writing is unique Will Patton brings it alive as no other reader could. I would love to see this novel made into a move.
If you are looking for Lonesome Dove you must have took a wrong turn.
No charecter depth and no conclusive point to the mindless blathering.
A terrific book. The author Larry McMurtry won a Pulitzer Prize for Lonesome Dove. Although I never read westerns, I read all that Mr McMurtry writes and I am never disappointed. The actor who reads the book is superb. We had it playing in the car and drove an extra hour into the night just so we could listen to the story. You will never regret listening to this story.
"Another wonderful tale"
This is a great story with some wonderful Larry McMurtry characters, brilliantly read by actor Will Patton. If you enjoyed Lonesome Dove, you'll love this, too.
