Publisher's Summary

With a thriving parahuman accounting practice, a steady relationship, and a circle of trusted friends, Fred's undead life has become more enjoyable than his normal one ever was. Unfortunately it also seems that he's no longer the only vampire to appreciate the up-and-coming city of Winslow, Colorado. A new clan of vampires is moving in, and they aren't well known for tolerating outsiders in their territory.

Now Fred must cope with the growing presence - and threat - of other vampires even as he struggles to keep up with his business' demands and make time for his friends. Between hidden parahuman towns, crazed vampire hunters, quarreling mages, and the world's least subtle spy, it will take all of Fred's wiles just to keep his head above water. And as the new clan sinks their fangs deeper and deeper into his city, the undead accountant is faced with a choice between two equally unappealing options: flee his home or stand against an entire clan of fellow vampires.

"The gang's back and there's trouble stirring in town. Fred is will have to deal with a gift, a debt, and an acquisition."

This is the third book in the series. But I'm willing to bet you knew that. The ebook was released last year (2016), in July I believe, and I could not press the purchase button quickly enough. I love this quirky little series. Each book consists of several short shorts that weave together well; I often consider these books to be more an anthology or serial than a novel. But don't be fooled, the plot and arch of the combined stories are smooth.
The reason I also purchased the audio book is Kirby Heyborne. He brings such life to the characts (even the undead ones), and each one has a clear consistent voice.
If you've ever read a book, then listened to the audio book version, you know there can be small disconnects from time to time because of the way you perceived a line of text sounding versus what the narrator does with that same line. Hawthorne does a great job keeping those moments to a minimum.
Aside from my usual complaint that it was too short (i cry for more with every ending and reread...of which, including audio book versions, I've read each book over 10 times. Yes they are that good), I have to say there were moments that also felt like the characters were knowingly fighting against their own growth. This might just be me seeing the growth happening when it actually hasn't. Call it wishful thinking I suppose. If not it's very meta.
The Fred series is fun, quirky, a little subversive, and well worth your time. I hope you'll give it a try.

"how to make boring in to fun"

this book and ita prequels are all great. the only down side is that its only the third book. the story of Fred needs more books and it would be fun to know more about the extended universe this book exist in. also the narator is perfect for this bool. 5 stars all around.

    "God I Love This Series"
Would you consider the audio edition of Bloody Acquisitions to be better than the print version?

    Yes.

What other book might you compare Bloody Acquisitions to and why?

Indexing by Seanan McGuire. They both have a season-of-a-series-rather-than-a-book-feel.

What does Kirby Heyborne bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

He is able to bring the characters to life in a way that the print version is just not able to.

In movies their are the "safe characters" the kind that are simple yet very fascinating that most actors can play and almost no can say they did a bad job. Then their are actors who can take the stupidest, blandest and/or boring character/s and make the most enjoyable character/s of the entire movie. And finally you have those rare times when one of those great actors portrays one of those "safe characters" and you get one of most compelling performances of all time.

This is the audible equivalent of those kind of performances.

    Any additional comments?

I have said before and I'll say it again. This is one of my favorite series of all time. I really can't say anymore than buy it, you won't regret it.

    "!Love Fred. Need more"

I still enjoy this series. You should read this in order to appreciate the relationships. Loyalty and Friendship are the themes of this series and theme in this book. There is some action, I mean there are vampires and assorted other paranormals. In books one and two you will can get a demonstration of the various powers. This book will not give you that exposure. As Fred goes around returning clients’ tax documents you get glimpses into paranormal action/powers for different species.

There are rules and processes to vampires moving into new territory. Unfortunately, his friends cannot do much to help with his dilemma. If you have followed the series, you know that Fred will not ask his friends to put themselves in a compromising position.
The real conflict is, should Fred stay in Winslow where everyone he has come to know and love reside or will he have to run? Fred is not a physically active person. He prefers to solve problems amicably. Fred is an oddity. Vampires rule by imitation. If you are familiar with the series you know it is engrossing to watch Fred be Fred. I enjoyed this book. As a matter of fact, I am going to reread book two. I missed a character’s/entity’s story somewhere down the line. This is an easy enjoyable read, which does not disappoint.

Who was your favorite character and why?

I really love Krystal a lot; her go-getter no bull attitude really resonates with me and my personality. She helps the evolution of Fred into a more engrossed and interesting character.

    Any additional comments?

I had read a lot of other comments on here so I was a little mixed on what I was getting into. The story is still segmented but less disconnected than previous books. It flows very well and I was completely in love with almost every character in Fred's friendship circle.

The writing tells the story, and keeps the plot going, while the narrator is part of story.

I'm not sure what I expected when I began listening to this series, but I am hooked! It's smart, witty, and engaging. The narrator is stellar as Fred and I can't wait to hear what's next..... hopefully soon!

"Great series. Awesome uses of foreshadowing."
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I happen to like urban fantasy and am an accountant, so this hits the money for me. I would recommend it to anyone who I know has taste like me.

What did you like best about this story?

The best part for me is that Drew Hayes uses foreshadowing very well, so the series and just this book as well is very fun to listen to and come up with theories about what will happen later on. Example, when we first meet Krystal at the reunion she is dressed as a devil. Later we learn she has one insider of her. Also, I love the characters. They're fun, and funny.
