Publisher's summary

Thirteen-year-old Angel Sullivan falls in love with her family's new home - the house that stands at Black Creek Crossing in the small town of Roundtree, Massachusetts. But the idyll is soon shattered as Angel learns a shocking secret about the house. It seems that a double murder took place there, and no one has lived at Black Creek Crossing since.

As Angel and her family begin to confront the mounting perils in their new dwelling, increasingly bizarre events occur in Roundtree: terrible storms strike; seemingly inexplicable "accidents" transpire; and rumors of witchcraft, a phenomenon that figured in the town's history hundreds of years earlier, begin to resurface.

Critic reviews

"Angel and Seth are two more of the immensely sympathetic and appealing teen protagonists that Saul excels at creating....[A] remarkably gratifying horror yarn." ( Booklist)

Love this book

I've loved this book since I was 14, but the one thing I wish was different about it was the ending, but over all it's a really fun read

The narrator is quite annoying.

The story is good but not great. I feel that the story had to many unnecessary people and there story. The main character’s were short played and unimportant details about the family. MOST OF ALL, the Narrator had this annoying way to express the character emotions. The near whisper of the word accentuated. In fact sometimes the word was spoken in such a way that his voice went out all together. Took me from the immersion of the story. The ending was just disappointing and the overall storyline was borderline boring. Not his best book. I’m quite sad.

It was ok

Trigger warning- themes of incest.

Not one of my favorites by Saul. Performance was fine, but the story was just meh.

Favorite Book

This is my favorite John Saul book. I have it in paperback, hardcover, & audio. I love to fall asleep to it. I honestly enjoyed it.
I love the storyline, the area that the story takes place. I love the fact of it being about Witches, & New England, the seasons, then the characters.
Then the narrator did an absolutely amazing job. He changed voices, had them have accents, also put feelings into the reading.
I would recommend this book to anyone who likes Colonial times, Witches, New England, & mysteries.
Happy listening.

Interesting, but eventually derivative.

I read this when I was about 16. Decided to check it our again. The story starts off interesting. Two outcast teens bond together over witchcraft while one lives in a murder house, but unfortunately the author just scratches the superficial surface of the story using the same tired scenarios that's been done by far greater authors like the likes of Stephen King.

As for the narration it wasn't overall annoying but the way who portrayed the angel didn't sit right with me. As well, I feel the intonation and pauses in some parts were odd.

Overall it's not a bad book to pick up when you have some whatever time, and if you don't go in expecting much you'll probably find the experience somewhat enjoyable.
