Publisher's Summary

Elizabeth "Bette" Leigh Black comes of age in the years before WWII. Although money is scarce in the aftermath of the Depression, her home with her mother, Chloe, and her stepfather is happy. But as the war taints their sheltered world, Bette begins to realize life is sometimes cruel, and not everyone has the happiness she does. She finishes school and briefly becomes involved in anti-Nazi espionage until she marries. Married life, however, is not the happy dream she imagined. Sent overseas, her husband, Curt, falls in love with a young Frenchwoman and leaves Bette alone and pregnant. She is forced to rely on her own strength, and her God's, and returns to espionage. When Curt finally returns to beg for reconciliation, Bette must decide whether or not she can trust him again, and if marriage to him is truly what is right for her and her daughter.

What the Critics Say

"Lyn Cote's craftsmanship shines in Bette. Her beautiful plotting includes textured settings that jet you around the world into the lives of characters so real we think we know them. Add a heroine we can all admire, and once again the ladies of Ivy Manor grab hold of your heart and hang on." (Lois Richer)

"Good story - don't like this narrator"

The storyline is good, the historical aspects well blended with the personal, romantic relationships. The first novel, "Chloe", was good also, and well-narrated. This one is done by a different narrator, and it suffers greatly for it. The fake male voices, and at times, the nearly shouting loudness of the her narration is annoying at best. I was hoping the next one would be with the original narrator, however, no such luck. Listen to a sample before buying, maybe she won't annoy you as much as she did me.

    "Bette"

Excellent historical fiction. Good representation of the times. I loved the strength of this character. Can't wait for the next one.
