Publisher's Summary

Abbie Fox hasn't seen her father or two younger sisters in almost two years, during which time she has jetted around the world and experienced life, if not love. But now Lily, the baby of the family, is sending Abbie urgent emails begging her to return home to Nantucket. Their middle sister, Emma, has taken to her bed, emotionally devastated after the loss of her high-powered stockbroker's job and a shockingly unexpected break-up with her fiance. Also, Lily is deeply worried that Marina, the beautiful, enigmatic woman who is renting their guest house, has set her sights on the sisters' widowed father, Jim.

The Fox girls closed ranks years ago after the haunting, untimely death of their mother, but seeing their dad move on with his life forces each of them to take stock. Over the course of the summer, the sisters' lives grow as turbulent as the unpredictable currents encircling Nantucket. When Abbie encounters an incredibly appealing married man, she breaks her own rules in the name of love, fearing all the while that she’ll regret it.

Meanwhile, type-A Emma learns a new definition of success, and strong-minded Lily must reconcile her dreams with reality. Even Marina, who has come to Nantucket to forget heartbreak and betrayal, faces an astonishing turn of events that will find her torn between fate and freedom. At summer's end, these unforgettable women will face profound choices and undergo personal transformations that will surprise even themselves.

    "Nice Surprise"

I only picked this book, because it was inexpensive, and long. I was just looking for a book to carry me over until my next credits. I certainly am glade that I found it. I really enjoyed all the characters and their complicated life.

    "enjoyable novel"

I really enjoyed Beachcombers by Nancy Thayer. Even though it is a largely light-hearted novel she also managed to throw in a few twist and turns that the reader won't see coming. I thought that Karen White was a good narrator.

"An enjoyable book, with some flaws"

I enjoyed listening to this book, a story of three sisters and their father falling in and out of love over the course of a summer. Some things about the story were a little too "pat"-- some plot themes seemed familiar and repetitive with other things I've read or movies I've seen. There were some laugh-out-loud moments and a few moments when I felt like I was waiting for something to happen. I did not enjoy the narration; Ms. White's voice a little too "arresting" and sometimes just comes off as tired. But overall, an enjoyable summer "read."

    "A GREAT Summer read!!!"
Would you consider the audio edition of Beachcombers to be better than the print version?

I love audio additions I feel more of the story.

What did you like best about this story?

There is no one thing; the story was excellent in the relationships of family and those who fell in love and how it was handled. It wasn't simply a light summer read because it had many wonderful dementions. I loved the entire book from beginning to end!

What does Karen White bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Karen White did a fabulous narration; each of the characters felt extremely real and emotions were caught; that sometimes fails in reading by book.

Who was the most memorable character of Beachcombers and why?

That's difficult to answer they were all excellent. Marina found a true life after being dumped by her husband and marrying her best friend. She found her real self in Nantucket with the Fox family. The Fox family was made up of a lot of emotional parts because of their Mother's death and the reason for it. Watching the sisters grow was captivating.

    Any additional comments?

I loved this book because it had many facets in relationships. It wasn't a fluff story it had many themes all working and entertained. Loved the entire book!!!

    "Good Family Story"

Beachcombers is a good family sister story. Each sister has concerns and needs in her life, her other sisters help her through. Then there's dad who has taken up with a woman the sisters are feeling rather insecure about.

Not a thriller but simply a nice story that develops well. Very enjoyable listening.

"The reader of the book annoyed me to no end"
What would have made Beachcombers better?

A different narrator. There was such an effort to make the characters sound different that the voice she chose were either whiny, over pronounced or sounded bored to tears.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

    Predictable, cliche

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

The story was interesting enough to have on as background. I kept hoping it would redeem itself. The reading of it would grind on me and I would have to turn it off.

    Any additional comments?

The story was very vanilla, bland.
