Publisher's summary

From marriage, infidelity, and the mayhem of motherhood to scandal, tragedy, and illness - three women seek peace and comfort in Nantucket as they cope with life's challenges.

Three women - burdened with small children, unwieldy straw hats, and some obvious emotional issues - tumble onto the Nantucket airport tarmac one hot June day. Vicki is trying to sort through the news that she has a serious illness. Her sister, Brenda, has just left her job after being caught in an affair with a student. And their friend Melanie, after seven failed in vitro attempts, is pregnant at last - but only after learning that her husband is having an affair. They have come to escape, enjoy the sun, and relax in Nantucket's calming air. But into the house, into their world, steps 22-year-old Josh Flynn.

Barefoot weaves these four lives together in a story with enthralling sweep and scope - a novel that is as fun and memorable and bittersweet as that one perfect day of summer.

OMG...spoiler alert:

I am cancer free as of now(about two and a half years after diagnosis) and this book really hit me hard. I would buy it again despite the knowledge I have after reading it.

A whole lotta cancer...

This was in no way a bad book... But it was filled with more dark “cancer” moments than I was looking for in this otherwise refreshing and often lighthearted story around the other women.

It was a fine story, but not at all what I expected.

Too much unnecessary information

The story wasn’t bad but it was frustrating to get to the end of a chapter and realize it had taken 10 minutes to say what could’ve been said in 5.

This started out slow but then you get invested!

This started out slow but then you get invested in to the four main characters stories. As always it makes you want to live on Nantucket and go to the beach.

get a bottle ready, do the he-said-she-said game

this was a great book, the only thing I didn't like was all the he said Peter said she said it just seemed like it must have been a drinking game every time you heard of sewing so said you should take a shot

Excellent story

Was difficult for the first few chapters, but once I got going I couldn't stop listening to it! Was captivating!

Won’t read author again

The story was good but the language was totally uncalled for. I won’t read her again or ever recommend this book or author. She loves the F word and I found it over the top and uncalled for. Just tell the story, it was good enough

Another Entertaining "Beach Read"

“Barefoot” is another entertaining “Beach Read” by Elin Hilderbrand. After reading 6 books by Elin Hilderbrand the “The Hotel Nantucket” is still the author’s best read!!! Experienced as an Audio Book.

Unlikely Characters but Writing is Good

I was horrified, continuously, throughout the story by the behaviors of the main characters. The only characters with any substance and hope were some of the males. Reading this, I have to wonder if Ellin Hilderbrand dislikes women. Or, maybe, she doesn’t feel that characters with character are interesting. There were so many times I just wanted to stop listening! However, the narrator is really good. And the writing is pretty good too. I just prefer to read a book where there’s a character that I really really like and care about. I’d suggest another title unless you like reading about selfish, shallow women.

Summer lessons

Enjoyed this book. These girls grew over the summer, learned more about who they are and what love truly means.
