Publisher's summary

Even four years after the sudden death of his wife, best selling novelist Mike Noonan can't stop grieving, nor can he return to his writing. Now his nights are plagued by vivid nightmares of the house by the lake. Despite these dreams, or perhaps because of them, he decides to return to Sara Laughs, the Noonans' isolated summer home. In his beloved Yankee town, he finds himself falling in love with a widowed young mother, who struggles to keep custody of her 3-year-old daughter. He is also drawn into the mystery of Sara Laughs, now the site of ghostly visitations, ever-escalating nightmares, and the sudden recovery of his writing ability. What are the forces that have been unleashed here - and what do they want of Mike Noonan?

A hauntingly beautiful story for all listeners

Having Stephen King read was an unexpected and greatly appreciated feature. Great work here.

Mike's journey throughout the book was captivating and held me tightly to keep me listening. King helped me feel the emotions in all the scene's, I never grew weary of his narration.

The music from time to time was distracting, a clear mark of Simon & Schuster Audio. They ruined Insomnia for me, but I guess they learned a lesson for here. Sometimes the music was a bit too loud, but King made me stay.

Introduction to SK

When I first read this novel in a cold Montanan winter back in 7th grade, I had declared this book to be my favorite SK novel and it was my introduction to his works. I love this novel, and the narration was able to encompass and encourage all of the feelings I had when I first read it. Excellent book, and excellent narration.

Twists and turns

Took me a bit to sink my teeth in. However, once I did it was almost a non-stop listen.

Say what you will, the recording is fabulous!

Stephen King goes gothic. It is also, as far as I know, the first time this author has attempted to write a romance. Of course, don't expect anything close to Harlequin. For one, it's about a million times longer. King tends to go on a bit when he doesn't need to. However, if you are a King fan you probably won't be too disappointed.

Recording: I found the best part of this book, by far, was the recording. King reads this himself, which means he knows exactly what it should sound like. He has also used music to enhance several areas of the novel.

Weakness: This isn't an edge of your seat book. It starts slow and never takes on a breakneck pace.

This is a book for people who enjoy a slow-paced ghost story that takes advantage of a remote and spooky environment.

king reading is excellent

This is my first King audiobook and the fact is I chose the book because King was reading it. I was not disappointed. King is Mike Noonan. At times I felt as if I were in the same room having a conversation with him. Truly an amazing performace by King. As for the book it doesn't disappoint....my only reason for 4 stars is because I think King spends a little too much time in some of the dream sequences. He could have cut 2 hours off the book without ruining a thing. Amazing book with an amazing reading by King. It's worth every penny.

I love when King reads his own work!

Any additional comments?

I love this book. I love the Maine characters he creates. And he know how to read these characters with the Maine accent.

another good read by King

Although I don't think of myself as a King fan, I keep on enjoying his work. I found the story captivating and actually enjoyed King's narration. I prefer a reader who doesn't do "too much" acting, and I figure King knew how he wanted the book to read. Worth the download.
