Publisher's Summary

When a fire destroys the ugly rectory, there is much discussion among the Thrush Green townsfolk about what will become of the vacant site, now that the previous residents (the village rector and his wife) have been transferred to another village. Everyone is cheered when it is decided to build some retirement homes, and so Rectory Cottages begin to take shape, designed by a local architect. But then feelings run high and wagging tongues are again engaged over the question of who will live in these new homes. And after those people are chosen, will they get along together? There are plenty of wrinkles to iron out before any newcomers will feel at home in Thrush Green.

    "Quintessential English Village Stories"

My wife and I discovered Miss Read some 20 years ago in British audiobooks read by Gwen Watford. We're delighted to find them again on audible.com. This and other books about life in Thrush Green tell the simple stories about life in an English cotswold village, peopled by charming characters who deal with each other's foibles and the drama of daily life.

Gwen Watford does a splendid job in creating the characters and providing the "picture" of life in Thrush Green.

You can't do better for a pleasant afternoon's listen -- in the car, at home, on vacation or whereever.

    "Comfort and Joy"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes, if they like cozy, and cheering tales. I love these books because they are so very humane, very funny in the dry British way that I enjoy, and very wise. I also enjoy the way Miss Read ties the story of the people into their surroundings; her love of the beauty of the countryside is skillfully communicated. I personally have never read anyone other than Collette who has such a love the natural world and paints it so beautifully for the reader. Most of all I find these books comforting. Nellie Piggot is one of my favorite characters, and she comes to a good place in this book, which I find most satisfying.

What other book might you compare At Home in Thrush Green to and why?

In a way, it has some of the flavor of some of the Agatha Christies, in that it is so sensible. It's not a mystery, of course, and there really aren't any very unpleasant characters, but it has some of the basic commonsensical good temper that Christie can communicate.

What about Gwen Watford’s performance did you like?

LOVE Gwen Watford, she is absolutely the perfect person to read these books. If you want to see Gwen Watford having a good time, by the way, take a look at the Joan Hickson version of "The Mirror Cracked" (made in the 80's) and you will be able to enjoy two wonderful actresses having a splendid time, they are an absolute riot together, and I never fail to enjoy it!

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

I don't know what a tag line is.

    Any additional comments?

If you want to feel better about the world and humanity, you can not go wrong with the Miss Read books. They are kind, wise, funny, smart, beautifully crafted, and deeply engaging. If you want fast paced action, violence, sex, drugs, and rock and roll-steer clear!

    "Delightful story."
Where does At Home in Thrush Green rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

At Home in Thrush Green ranks among one of the best audiobooks I've listened to so far. Each of the Thrush Green stories stands alone, and yet to read them all gives one a great sense of satisfaction, of getting to know a community of real people. Gwen Watford is an excellent reader, able to evoke each character in such a way that they come to life. A thoroughly satisfactory experience.
