Animal Kingdom: An Apocalyptic Novel | [Iain Rob Wright]

Animal Kingdom: An Apocalyptic Novel

Everything is going great until a bizarre snake attack sends everybody in the zoo running for cover. It isn't long before Joe realizes that there is a lot more going on than a simple snake attack. And if the hungry lions, roaring gorillas and charging elephants now free from their cages have anything to say about it, there is more bloodshed to come. All of the world's animals are attacking, and no one knows why. What they do know is that man is now on the bottom of the food chain.

"Good Story of Animals and Humans Behaving Badly"

Nothing deep or complex here. Tight plot, action and human drama all within the confines of a British zoo. Well written and a decent performance.

    Story
"Brutal, yet entertaining!!! Of course it is!!!!"
    Any additional comments?

SPOILER ALERT. SPOILER ALERT. SPOILER ALERT.

I expected nothing the best from Mr. Wright and he delivered brilliantly!!

A reviewer summed up the characters perfectly....

Vix Kirkpatrick... "Joe is good man, his character is flawed and has the IRW usual aspects of heroism laced just enough with, WTF to make him believable.

Grace I found irritating, especially at the end. Bill was lovely and I think he could have played a bigger part. Shirley the necessary "nut job" was on hand at all the right moments, not enough back story on her. Mason? hmmmm a waste of space for me."
    Perfect!!!

    Two complaints:
    1. Victor and Randall...too predictable and soooo boring! I prefer bad guys in this type of story to take me by surprise. I knew they were bad so it was no surprise what they did.

    2. Why does everyone always have to die? I automatically know which characters will survive, which dulls a story just a bit. I can honestly count on two hands how many times a story has shocked me by not being predictable in that aspect.

    Overall:

An amazing performer, narrating an amazing suspenseful, brutal, entertaining story from an awesome author (I really do love his stories)! Having them on audibles is a bonus!

    "Great Story, Mediocre Narration"
Would you consider the audio edition of Animal Kingdom: An Apocalyptic Novel to be better than the print version?

Unfortunately, I do not consider the audio edition to be better than the print version. Although Peter Bishop has a clear voice, he lacked the intensity I felt the story required. Even during the most intense parts, his voice could have put me to sleep. It felt like he lacked the enthusiasm the story called for.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Animal Kingdom: An Apocalyptic Novel?

The beginning of the novel was the most memorable part. Imagine turning on the news to find that animals everywhere were trying to kill humans. That's something you don't forget.

What does Peter Bishop bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Peter Bishop has a crystal clear voice and a lovely British accent.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Had the narration been a little more intense, I may have had an extreme reaction. But as it is, there was no reaction.

    Any additional comments?

Although it sounds like I disliked this audio book, I didn't. The story was one of the most unique I've ever experienced, but the narration just lacked a bit of pizazz.

"Interesting concept - Handled in a most boring way"
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

Fans of English drawing room comedies

Would you recommend Animal Kingdom: An Apocalyptic Novel to your friends? Why or why not?

I would not recommend this book to anyone. Based on the cover art, anyone expecting what is portrayed on it would be disappointed.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Animal Kingdom: An Apocalyptic Novel?

Perhaps expanding the story from the people trapped in the building to more of the situation outside. There was so much time spent on how the rather boring, cardboardy-character people interact and how to be nice to each other that it truly detracted from a potentially exciting and amazing story.

    Any additional comments?

The story should be a bit more interesting, but seems to focus more on how to be polite to each other in an emergency and not call people names. The animals going berserk and slaughtering all the people bit seems to be handled as only an afterthought.
