Publisher's Summary

Angels in the Gloom is an intense saga of love, hate, obsession, and murder that features an honorable English family: brothers Joseph and Matthew Reavley, and their sisters, Judith and Hannah.

In March 1916, Joseph, a chaplain at the front, and Judith, an ambulance driver, are fighting not only the Germans but the bitter cold and the appalling casualties of the Battle of Somme. Scarcely less at risk, Matthew, an officer in England's Secret Intelligence Service, fights the war covertly from London. Only Hannah, living with her young children in the old family home in tranquil Cambridgeshire, seems safe.

Appearances, however, are deceiving. By the time Joseph returns home, rumors of spies and traitors are rampant in Cambridgeshire. And when the body of a savagely murdered weapons scientist is discovered in a village byway, the fear that haunts the battlefields settles over the town - along with the shadow of the obsessed ideologue who murdered the four siblings' parents on the eve of the war. Once again, this icy, anonymous powerbroker, the Peacemaker, is plotting to kill.

Perry's kaleidoscopic new novel illuminates an entire world, from the hell of the trenches to a London nightclub where a beautiful Irish spy plies her trade; from the sequestered laboratory where a weapon that can end the war is being perfected to the matchless glory of the English countryside in spring. Angels in the Gloom is a masterpiece, steeped in history and radiant with truth. It warms the heart even as it chills the blood.

I am a senior citizen who loves a good mystery, but I object to books with profanity and explicit sexual situations.

    "OUTSTANDING!"

I cannot remember when I've enjoyed a series as much as this one! What a surprise! I am an Anne Perry fan - my favorite series up to now has been the Charlotte & Thomas Pitt series. My first thought when I saw this series was that I would not like it, because I'm not interested in war stories. However, because I really like Anne Perry, I thought I'd give this series a try. I'm totally hooked. I'm so anxious to go on to the next book!
This is one of those series that is continued from one book to the next, so I highly recommend starting from the beginning.
The main characters in this series are members of the same family. Hannah, the oldest girl is married to Archie, who is in the Navy, and they have 3 children. Joseph is the oldest son - a chaplain. Matthew is an intelligence officer. Judith is the youngest, an ambulance driver. The series begins just before the war, as they hear of the death of their parents in an automobile accident (or is it an accident?) With the backdrop of the war, Perry weaves a tale of intrigue - murders on the home front, German spies, jealousy. She also helps the reader to understand the agony of those waiting at home with nerves worn to a frazzle and how it affects relationships. She brings us to the horrors of the battlefield and also the war at sea.
I feel an attachment to this family, as if I know them personally, and I want to know what happens to them. To me, this is the mark of a great writer.
Michael Page is a fantastic narrator, artfully switching from an English to German accent to a Russian, French, and American.
I would give this series ten stars if I could!
    Highly recommend!

    "Fascinating series"

I knew nothing about WWI and didn't think I'd be at all interested, but I like Anne Perry's writing style, so gave it a try. The series is amazing! I was up half the night listening to the second half of this book.....couldn't put it down.
