Publisher's Summary

Angels, the first and most critically acclaimed of Denis Johnson's novels, puts Jamie Mays, a runaway wife toting along two kids, and Bill Houston - ex-Navy man, ex-husband, and ex-con - on a Greyhound Bus for a dark, wild ride cross country.

Driven by restless souls, bad booze, and desperate needs, Jamie and Bill bounce from bus stations to cheap hotels as they ply the strange, fascinating, and dangerous fringe of American life. Their tickets may say Phoenix, but their inescapable destination is a last stop marked by stunning violence and mind-shattering surprise.

Denis Johnson, known for his portraits of America's dispossessed, sets off literary pyrotechnics on this highway odyssey, lighting the trek with wit and a personal metaphysics that defiantly takes on the world.

    "Great book - Awful reading!"
    What disappointed you about Angels?

Angels is a wonderful novel, and well-known to me. I chose it to try out the quality of audible's product. My dissapointment arises solely from the nature of the performance. The reader sounds like a thid rate television actor (with a nice voice) reading off lines that he neither cares about nor understands. I have listened to hundreds of audio-books and audio lectures, none have been so artificial and lifeless as this one. Angels is a dark and troubling book - and yet none of that comes through in the rote inflections of the reader's voice and cadence.A hint to the problem appears immedately, when the reading opens to the highly inappropriate sound of melodious guitar plucking. Tacky and cheap! Besides, who asked the publisher to add his musical interpretation? The combination of the reading and the music immediately called to mind some artificialy sentimental item buried in the final moments of a local TV newscast. I found myself, for the first time, incapable of following the reading.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Angels?

Since I deleted the file within ten minutes of commencing to listen, I cannot attest to any memorable moments.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Victor Bevine?

Either the author, or anyone passionate about literature

    Any additional comments?

I sincerely hope that Angels is not representative of all most of Audible's versions of serious literature

"One of my fave books from one of my fave authors"

I loved this book when I read it in college years ago and never forgot some of the integral scenes. Denis Johnson is one of my favorite writers, and this is one of my favorite books of his. His writing style has changed over the years, but this, his first novel, is still one of his best. It can be hard to read for some people because of the subject matter, but it's a piece of literature, not pulp fiction. Give this book a chance if you love great writing.
