Editorial reviews

Editors Select, May 2013 - When it’s been six years since a best-selling author’s last book, there is a heightened sense of anticipation and high expectations surrounding that next new release. And the Mountains Echoed by Khaled Hosseini is the perfect example of this, and does not disappoint. An expansive family saga, both modern and mythic, the story begins in a small Afghan town in the 1950s and follows one family through time and across the globe to France, California, and Greece. While there is a broad sweeping sense of the effect of one generation on the next, it’s the personal relationships between siblings that I found the most memorable; in particular how Abdullah, a 10-year-old boy, becomes the caretaker to his three-year-old sister, Pari, and does so with love, skill, and absolutely no hesitation or resentment. Their forced separation is the catalyst that creates the conflict and momentum that propels the story beyond Afghanistan and into the larger world. I look forward to the audio (including the author’s narration) and then to Hosseini’s next book, regardless of when that may be. Tricia, Audible Editor

Publisher's summary

On May 21, 2013, the new novel from Khaled Hosseini: an unforgettable story about finding a lost piece of yourself in someone else.

Khaled Hosseini, the number-one New York Times best-selling author of The Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns, has written a new novel about how we love, how we take care of one another, and how the choices we make resonate through generations. In this tale revolving around not just parents and children but brothers and sisters, cousins and caretakers, Hosseini explores the many ways in which families nurture, wound, betray, honor, and sacrifice for one another; and how often we are surprised by the actions of those closest to us, at the times that matter most. Following its characters and the ramifications of their lives and choices and loves around the globe—from Kabul to Paris to San Francisco to the Greek island of Tinos—the story expands gradually outward, becoming more emotionally complex and powerful with each passing minute.

definitly worth reading

If you could sum up And the Mountains Echoed in three words, what would they be?

dramatic, well written

What was one of the most memorable moments of And the Mountains Echoed?

the fairy tale at the very beginning of the book.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No, the book offers a lot of material to think about because of it's topics that affect every one of us, that is why I would say you actually should take some time for it.

Any additional comments?

Dont read the book if you re just looking for entertainment. This book contains a lot of tragedy and is not too easy to digest.

Nice story and good performance!

Nice story with some insights about Afghan culture. The story is a bit hard to follow because Khaled Hosseini is always jumping around in time through the different characters of the story, nonetheless, it is a good book.

Neutral

The narrators accents made it difficult to understand and the there were multiple storylines in the book that went unexplained. It felt like random stories of a family but they almost all ended in tragedy or the reader is left hanging. In the end I liked all the characters and wanted to hear more about them but I felt so far removed from the original characters that the end felt sad and a bit flat.

the tears started at the first chapter

Would you consider the audio edition of And the Mountains Echoed to be better than the print version?

I adored the narration of this book. I realized that other readers found the accents distracting. But, I felt that it added a lot to the story. Their voices felt genuine and made this already deeply moving book even more so. To me, it was like hearing poetry read vs. reading it to oneself.

What did you like best about this story?

It's rare that a book comes along that digs so deeply into your heart. This was a sad, insightful, thought provoking, heart wrenching story about family, loss, aging, rebirth, human connection and human cruelty. It's the kind of book that when it's over you just want to sit and stare into space to let it all sink in.

Which scene was your favorite?

The thing about this book is that the beauty just never let's up. Each chapter is so beautifully crafted and each character so well developed that it's impossible for me to choose a favorite.

Any additional comments?

Khaled Housseini's writing is so beautiful that sometimes the sentences themselves just carry you away. It's the kind of book that you want to replay certain paragraphs just to hear them read again, as one would a poem.

Loved the narration.

Where does And the Mountains Echoed rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

So far I've loved all of Khaled Hosseini's books. Listening to his stories of life in Afghanistan make you appreciate how really good we have it here in the U.S. I really liked how he mingled those stories with stories of how people change and adapt to life in the West. I also really enjoyed the narration. A few words were hard to understand, but overall I felt the different voices and accents helped tell the stories better. You really felt connected to the tales.

What was one of the most memorable moments of And the Mountains Echoed?

I really liked the tale of the doctor and what happened when he went back home to the U.S. I think for most people, this would hit home.

Sad Stories of Afghanistan People

I came to understand much more clearly the situations, hardships, culture and some part of the history of Afghanistan. The wars and ways how they have lived and are living. It was much heart-breaking to know a little bit of the women's way of living. I sincerely wish the situations get better and happiet for the people ASAP.

Compelling

Powerful. The choices made by those closest to Abdullah in selling his three-year old sister,Pari, create an emotionally complex story that becomes more powerful with the turn of each page.
