Lola has no intention of accepting when her boyfriend Dougie's snobbish mother offers her £10,000 to break up with him. Then she discovers a secret that makes her think again. Dougie would probably have broken up with her in the long run, and this way she can help one of the people she loves most in the world.

Ten years later, though, when Lola meets Dougie again, her feelings for him are as strong as ever. But she broke Dougie's heart - and he's about to discover that she was paid to do it. Lola's very attractive and very persuasive - but she's got her work cut out if she wants to win him back.

    "Great listen!"

The characters are interesting, quirky and likeable. The narrarator's performance was great. This was the first time I listened to a Jill Mansell book, and I liked the book and the narrarator (Julie Maisey) so much that I searched for other books that had this same combination. Lots of laugh out loud moments. If you like a feel-good-listen with substance, don't hesitate to download this one!

"2 ½ stars. Good stories for secondary characters."

But I did not like the conflict for the main characters. I’m angry when I think about it. But gosh she’s a good writer. This was enjoyable story telling about several characters with love interests. I was engaged all the way through. BUT I could not accept or enjoy the premise of the book - the conflict between the main couple. In the beginning Lola accepts money to break up with Doug. She needs the money to help someone else - it’s life or death. Then she “promises” never to tell anyone about whom she gave the money to or why. Even after this person dies she keeps the secret which causes problems for her. I did not like that idea. I wish the author picked a different reason to separate the couple.

Second problem: The couple is apart through the entire book - until the last two minutes - when someone changes their mind. That wasn’t good enough. I wanted something better to get them together. And I wanted to see them together for at least a little while at the end.

Third problem: Lola and Adelle had an agreement/contract. Lola promised to stay away from Doug in return for money. But ten years later Lola is back in Doug’s life trying to win him back. Apparently Adelle is not enforcing their agreement. Why not? And if she is NOT going to enforce it, then why couldn’t Lola have started seeing Doug earlier? That was vague and unanswered.

Fourth problem: Lola and Doug were truly in love with each other. She could have broken up with him in person and said I love you but I have to do this because of something I can’t tell you about. Instead she lied and let him believe she no longer loved him. The agreement didn’t require her to say that.

The audiobook narrator Julie Maisey was good.

    Genre: chick lit

    "BEST JILL MANSELL BOOK!"

This was the best Jill Mansell book I heard on audible. I enjoyed many of them, especially Perfect Timing, but this one was the best story (so funny - I kept laughing out loud) and had great narration!

    "My favorite by this author"

I've read or listened to quite a few books by Jill Mansell and this is my favorite. Likeable characters and an enjoyable story. The narrator did a good job too.

    "Six stars at least!"

This book is FANTASTIC! The story is well written and unbelievably funny - a romantic comedy that I would love to see play on the big screen. I will definitely be looking at more of this writer's work.

    "Great cast of characters!"
What did you love best about An Offer You Can't Refuse?

Often in chicklit/romance books that have multiple story lines going on the MCs story will be thinly formed. Mansell gives each character the attention they deserve. Her stories are always funny, sweet and topical. This one is no different.

You have the "bad boy" (well man) who sleeps around with the sweet but experienced girl (nothing I hate more in a romance is a slutty guy+inexperienced/virgin girl...yawn).

The recently "scorned" woman with a ticking biological clock. Preteen angst from the spunky and smart daughter. Tragedy but not over the top life can't go on kind. The glamorous ex Hollywood actress. Finally the awesome gay dad who isn't dealing with coming out like a lot of romance novelists assign them, he is dealing with raising his daughter.

What does Julie Maisey bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Maisey is fantastic, her voices serve each character well. My one complaint is her American accents. It wouldn't have bothered me but during a scene a character was imitating an East coast accent Masell wrote he did a spot on accent. It made me cringe, one part British with a dash of southern and a little Jersey for good measure.

Other than that Maisey delivered an excellent performance.

    "Nice, not thrilling but nice"

It was OK - I listened to the entire book but it was missing that "whats going to happen next" feel - I didn't really bond to the characters I just plodded along with their story, figuring out myself what would happen which was quite obvious. I wouldn't say not to read it, but just don't expect much.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

This is a fast-paced novel with lots of laughs and heart. It reminded me of Sophie Kinsella's writing, which is a good thing.

"Great story, but the narrator needs a tissue"

This was the first Jill Mansell book I'd read & I really enjoyed it. The story was interesting and it also had a number of side stories/characters which ran along side the main plot, but the narrators voice irritated at times. It felt as though she was suffering from a cold & needed to give her nose a good blow! I dont think it put me off as I immediately downloaded another Jill Mansell title (which I enjoyed equally).

    "FRUSTRATING"
Would you consider the audio edition of An Offer You Can't Refuse to be better than the print version?

definitely - much prefer to listen rather than sit and read, I think I might have given up on the book half way through if it was a paper version.

What other book might you compare An Offer You Can't Refuse to, and why?

None that I have read recently

Have you listened to any of Julie Maisey’s other performances? How does this one compare?

I haven't listened to any of her other book books but would definitely consider it after this one.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

    The same as this one.

    Any additional comments?

Really sad at times where a few tears appeared but was really happy with the ending and pleased that they forgave each other and got back together.

"A Girly Listen - no brain required"

This book is a very obvious one..... You know what to expect and you know it will all turn out wonderful for them all in the end. But there are a few laughs along the way and some quirky characters. However the narrator?s voice is very irritating, she seems to have a lisp or a cold, not sure which so that can be rather annoying. Generally a good listen, very girly, classic chit lit not talented writing.
