Publisher's summary

Changeling knight in the court of the Duke of Shadowed Hills, October “Toby” Daye has survived numerous challenges that would destroy fae and mortal alike.

Now Toby must take on a nightmarish new assignment. Someone is stealing both fae and mortal children — and all signs point to Blind Michael. When the young son of Toby’s closest friends is snatched from their Northern California home and his sister falls into a coma-like state, the situation becomes way too personal. Toby has no choice but to track the villains down, even when there are only three magical roads by which to reach Blind Michael’s realm — home of the legendary Wild Hunt — and no road may be taken more than once. If she cannot escape with all the children before the candle that guides and protects her burns away, Toby herself will fall prey to the Wild Hunt and Blind Michael’s inescapable power.

And it doesn’t bode well for the success of her mission that her own personal Fetch, May Daye - the harbinger of Toby’s own death — has suddenly turned up on her doorstep….

Always read Seanan McGuire

Another lovely story. Seanan McGuire has quickly become one of my favorites; if she writes it, I will read it

I'm hooked

Audible had a sale on book series, and I decided to experiment in urban fantasy, buying the first three October Daye novels. I'm hooked. I don't usually go for series because of the long commitment, but I already know I need to read all of this series. The characters are well-developed and perfectly flawed, and after three books, I pretty much want to adopt a rose goblin like Spike for myself. There is too much going on to just stop here.
Also, the narration is excellent. 5 stars across the board!

An Auto-Buy Series

It just keeps getting better and better. Late Eclipses will be released in November and the minute it's available on Audible, it's going straight to my cart. Start with Rosemary and Rue, read the books in order, and you won't be disappointed. The writing and the narration are both excellent.

this is the setup for all the rest

I love this series. One of the benefits of re-reading is the realization of how many hints (Easter eggs?) for the many books to come there is in this story. None is obvious but they are there. This my 4th time reading and 1st time as audiobook.

I like the narrator okay. She has a voice for everybody and she does female great. However, some of the males voices are very different from my expectation. Her Tybalt and Sylvester sound wrong but she nails Connor.

Third in Series and Quite Good

By the time I'm writing this the October Daye series has reached at least 7 books so I'm a bit behind, or I've been reading them out of order, which is entirely possible. Except for some references that I had to look up, the book stands alone pretty well. I generally like Seanan McGuire's writing though and I thought this story about children, Fae and human being stolen from their beds is fresh and interesting.

The story opens with October meeting her fetch-- the look alike who appears to someone before her death. The fetch is named May Daye which is painful given the fact that May is the opposite month from October and the use of May Day as code for a distress signal. Then the children of friends of her is stolen and Toby sets out to rescue them.

While it's not the greatest Urban Fantasy I have ever read it is quite good and entertaining.

Mary Robinette Kowal also does a good job with the narration. I found this an engrossing experience.

Formulaic But Fun

The story of Toby falls from the pen of Seanan McGuire in a formulaic fashion as it does from the Dresden Files though it does not meet that lofty goal.

The October Daye series is entertaining and a good way to spend about a dollar an hour for entertainment. It will keep your attention, so long as you don't focus on many of the inconsistencies in the story or world and just let it flow.

I'm still listening my way through the series, but I can't help but wonder if this series will fall into the same pits as Kim Harrison's The Hollows series did; the inability of the characters to grow internally over time. As it is, only time will tell.

Each better than the last

This is the one. This is the book that makes the series. If a series can't get you hooked by the third book, it won't. This book had me at the second, but this is the one where it really, really pulled me in.

If you have any interest at all in supernatural mysteries, buy this book, even if the first one didn't hook you.

Toby gets run near to death this time, and with good reason. She's got to pull out all the stops to save stolen children, and eventually, herself.

Best yet!

A good series just got fantastic! I liked the first two books, but Ms. McGuire has hit her stride in this one. Excellent book I highly recommend!
