Hawai'i

I loved the story itself. The Hawaiian history and culture was represented thoughtfully and it wasn't the maitai-coconut bikini novel you usually run across in fiction set in Hawai'i. 😞 sooo refreshing. Some reviews complain about the 'olelo in there but the narrator did a... decent-ish job. Small stuff like Kalakaua sounding like Kalakawa. Cadence was off. Hawaiian has a flow to it and her flow was... awkward.
My biggest issue was how she pronounce Midori. Japanese is my second language, Hawaiian another... She say it like "Muhdory" it is "Me-dory" but not that hard r... Totally grated on my nerves. *shudder*.
But the pronounciation makes sense when she does Bonnie as she is a guest to the islands. But in voicing Hinano who is kama'āina or Midori who is also local... no excuse.
Story makes it worth it though so don't let it stop you from buying it. It's very well done otherwise story and performance. 👏 Glad to own it.

The Aloha Quilt

Though my preference in reading/listening are thrillers and mystery novels, I have read/ listened to all of the Elm Creek Quilt novels. I have truly enjoyed them all, each for their own merits. I find them to be 'easy listening' as I quilt or do other needle work.
I gave "The Aloha Quilt" four stars even though I felt it was totally predictable. I had been waiting for this character to be the focus of one of Chiaverini's books, continuing the story after a long wait to see how Bonnie recovers from a disaster in her life in one of the much earlier novels. I was pleased with the way the story ended though I knew early on it was headed that direction.
**I would advise anyone who is interested in these novels, to read the first one, "The Quilters Apprentice" before any others, just to get a sense of the characters and how everything comes together in the beginning. However, most of them could potentially be 'stand alone' novels and several of them are, even though they are tied to the original characters.

disappointing

This was my first Elm Creek series book and likely to be my last. I should have read more about the book before purchasing it. I love Hawaii and quilting and thought it would be fun and a change of pace from my usual reading.
If someone wants a maudlin, predictable, sophomoric tale, with romance and a happy ending, this is the book for you. It just wasn't for me.

Good listen while quilting

I've listened to many books by this author and I have to tell you that I enjoy even the marginal books. This one definitely falls into the marginal category but still, isn't too bad. The plot is very predictable but if you are a quilter you will likely enjoy listening to it while quilting. The author's other books are much better, especially the Sugar Camp Quilt.

Nice history of Hawaiin quilts too

I'll keep saying it. I love these stories. They are not heavy reading (listening?) by any means and that's why I love them. This one made me want to make a quilt in the Hawaiin way. Will I? Doesn't matter. Nice listen.
Kudos to the reader too. I know which character she is now from book to book. Very cool.

The use of Hawaiian terms was striking

More unpleasantness than most of the other books (Except for “The Lost Quilter”)
Very pleasant to learn the Hawaiian terms and some of the history of Hawaii. Story is well written and quite cohesive.

Decent

I appreciated the Hawaiian history that touched on the overthrow of the Monarchy and wrongful imprisonment of the Queen. The main character was too dramatic and judgemental to me and that was tiresome. Will not read more from this author.

Jennifer’s writing and Christina’s narrative

I have every book written by Jennifer Chiaverini and all are worth listening too. I must give tribute to the narrator, Christina Moore. The way she reads a voice into every one’s character keeps me listening and wanting more. She is the very best narrator of all 123 books I have in my library. I wish she would narrate more books.
