Publisher's summary

Take one food writer named Cranky Agnes, add a hitman named Shane, mix them together with a Southern mob wedding, a missing necklace, two annoyed flamingos, and a dog named Rhett, and you've got a recipe for a sexy, hilarious novel about the disastrous side of true love...

Agnes Crandall's life goes awry when a dognapper invades her kitchen one night, seriously hampering her attempts to put on a wedding that she's staked her entire net worth on. Then a hero climbs through her bedroom window. His name is Shane - no last name, just Shane - and he has his own problems: He's got a big hit scheduled, a rival trying to take him out, and an ex-mobster uncle asking him to protect some little kid named Agnes. When he finds out that Agnes isn't so little, that his uncle has forgotten to mention a missing five million bucks he might have lost in Agnes' house, and that his last hit was a miss, Shane's life isn't looking so good, either. Then a bunch of lowlifes come looking for the money, a string of hitmen show up for Agnes, and some wedding guests gather with the intent to throw more than rice. Agnes and Shane have their hands full with greed, florists, treachery, flamingos, mayhem, mothers of the bride, and - most dangerous of all - each other.

Meh...

What did you like best about Agnes and the Hitman? What did you like least?

It made me laugh out loud at certain parts, which is always lovely. But then it also made me cringe and roll my eyes many times...kind of predictable.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

Predictable and very, very unrealistic.

Which character – as performed by Sandra Burr – was your favorite?

I don't really remember, but Sandra did a lovely job with all the voices.

Did Agnes and the Hitman inspire you to do anything?

Absolutely nothing.

I love this book

Okay, so I think my problem is that I've read this book so many times that the narrator just felt wrong to me. It's a really good book, its one that I will go back to at least once a year. If the narrator is off to you, you should still get the hard copy and read it. I think this one is perfect for a two-gender read because of the chapters alternating and it would have been a little richer if that could have been used!

My Go To Book

I listen to this book every few months. It's a comfort book! I know the story by heart and this won't win any literary awards but "Agnes and the Hitman" is like an old friend I look forward to visiting.

Great story told to perfection - Laugh out loud

This is one of my all time favorite books. I read it at least once a year. Great action, well constructed story, and amazing characters. The old South meets the Jersey mob, complete with good food, a cranky cook, a bitchy villain, flamingos, mobsters, goverment spooks and a cupcake hovering bloodhound.

The Best

All books written by Jennifer Crusie and Bob Mayer are great. But this book is their best. It is the funniest story, with the best plot, and interesting remarkable characters.

Loveable Book in Every Way

This is whole book is just a wonderful experience. The story, the characters and the narrator are the whole package and I loved it -- every minute. The narrator does such a wonderful job of making each character sound as unique as they are described. The story is engaging and I couldn't wait to see how it wrapped it up in the end. The character of Agnes is just delightful and I wish I had her spunk. The supporting characters are all individual and bring heart and sass to the story which starts with a bang and doesn't let up until the end. Just a great book.

Funny without being a comedy

Some stories try to make you laugh, this one will have you in tears of laughter (and sympathy) without the comedic push. It's one of those weeks where Murphy's Law reigns where the protagonists and their internal monologues try desperately to keep up. I've listened four times already and lured others in by leaving my headphones off. Great fun time!!!

Favorite Fluff

Crusie is my favorite fun read when I’m tired of the serious stuff and fed up with the real world - and this one (with Mayer) is just a delight.

Funny!

Cranky Agnes is a great character! I enjoyed the way JC and BM wove serious issues with humor and dysfunction...in a more-polite-pulp-fiction-y kind of way. The settings were great and the dialogue was very funny. The only thing that bothered me was the "thinking in their minds" recorded sound effect. It was distracting but by half way through the book it didn't bother me as much. Easy read with a smile on your face.

Great audio book

I Loved this book in hard copy. The voice actress does a great job at making the character voices distinct.
