Publisher's summary

Indiana, 1818. Moonlight falls through the dense woods that surround a one-room cabin, where a nine-year-old Abraham Lincoln kneels at his suffering mother's bedside. She's been stricken with something the old-timers call "Milk Sickness."

"My baby boy..." she whispers before dying.

Only later will the grieving Abe learn that his mother's fatal affliction was actually the work of a vampire.

When the truth becomes known to young Lincoln, he writes in his journal, "henceforth my life shall be one of rigorous study and devotion. I shall become a master of mind and body. And this mastery shall have but one purpose..." Gifted with his legendary height, strength, and skill with an ax, Abe sets out on a path of vengeance that will lead him all the way to the White House.

While Abraham Lincoln is widely lauded for saving a Union and freeing millions of slaves, his valiant fight against the forces of the undead has remained in the shadows for hundreds of years. That is, until Seth Grahame-Smith stumbled upon The Secret Journal of Abraham Lincoln, and became the first living person to lay eyes on it in more than 140 years.

Using the journal as his guide and writing in the grand biographical style of Doris Kearns Goodwin and David McCullough, Seth has reconstructed the true life story of our greatest president for the first time-all while revealing the hidden history behind the Civil War and uncovering the role vampires played in the birth, growth, and near-death of our nation.

Learnt a lot about Lincoln, who knew

I am surprised at how interesting this book was when it comes to Lincoln's real history. It made me read a lot about the man, and I am thankful for that. The reading is very well done and even if sometimes gore, I actually look forward for more of this author.

AN INSTANT FAVORITE!!!

Scott Holst (narrator) has an awesome voice. His accent, inflection, and cadence are exactly what I would expect The Great Man (Lincoln) to have sounded like. Further, Grahame-Smith's writing of dialog is completely in keeping with the literary convention of American English in the mid 1800's.

The whole premise of the book is really a lot of fun, mixing in actual history with the sub-plot of vampires and their hunters operating behind the scenes of The Civil War.

Buy it. Listen to it. Love it!

A different take on history

Unlike our government trying to rewrite history to suit its need. Seth Grahame-Smith offers a view of history that is completely different from what was written at the time. This is a great book for people who like vampire stories. It also gives us the hint that with so much that was written there was also more going on behind the scenes. It also leave it open to a squeal and hopefully Seth Graham-Seth will write it and not turn it over to others like with Pride and Prejudice and Zombies.

Wonderful weaving of fact and fiction

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Twist and turns made me look into the real life of Lincoln. He's done the research and blended the fiction with it beautifully.

What did you like best about this story?

It was not the usual vampire story.

What does Scott Holst bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I especially liked the way he presented each character. I don't get that reading to myself. Some narrators just read the story. He made the characters real and the times come alive. (no pun intended)

Who was the most memorable character of Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter and why?

For me Henry was the most memorable. His appearances and requests made the story.

Any additional comments?

I would highly recommend this book. History buffs to Buffy the Vampire Slayer fans.

Intense

I love the fact that this reads as if it is biography. The history is even accurate when it can and when it is most important. Then smith stretches the conjecture of the family life and love life of this the most famous of presidents. It a believable and and at the same time scary, beyond scary read. And thank you to the narrator for keeping me hooked throughout.

Lost Interest

I was really excited to finally listen to this book since it's been on my list for years now. Unfortunately I was pretty bored throughout. I would loose interest and move on to a different book then try and go back but never really got into it. I finished but I quit listening several times. The narrator wasn't bad but wasn't exciting either and seemed pretty monotone most of the book. It wasn't as exciting as I had hoped.

Very fun book

This book was well written and well conceived. It weaves together historical events with seemingly plausible fictional events. I liked this book because at times it was hard to tell where the fiction began. Overall, a very fun book.

Abe Lincoln

What a novel twist on a beautifully courageous man during our country's sad moments prior to the Civil War! As a huge fan of Vampire and Werewolf type movies and books, I loved the combination of one of my favorite past presidents and making him a vampire hunter. The inserts of actual historical facts were genius by the author!
