Publisher's summary

Indiana, 1818. Moonlight falls through the dense woods that surround a one-room cabin, where a nine-year-old Abraham Lincoln kneels at his suffering mother's bedside. She's been stricken with something the old-timers call "Milk Sickness."

"My baby boy..." she whispers before dying.

Only later will the grieving Abe learn that his mother's fatal affliction was actually the work of a vampire.

When the truth becomes known to young Lincoln, he writes in his journal, "henceforth my life shall be one of rigorous study and devotion. I shall become a master of mind and body. And this mastery shall have but one purpose..." Gifted with his legendary height, strength, and skill with an ax, Abe sets out on a path of vengeance that will lead him all the way to the White House.

While Abraham Lincoln is widely lauded for saving a Union and freeing millions of slaves, his valiant fight against the forces of the undead has remained in the shadows for hundreds of years. That is, until Seth Grahame-Smith stumbled upon The Secret Journal of Abraham Lincoln, and became the first living person to lay eyes on it in more than 140 years.

Using the journal as his guide and writing in the grand biographical style of Doris Kearns Goodwin and David McCullough, Seth has reconstructed the true life story of our greatest president for the first time-all while revealing the hidden history behind the Civil War and uncovering the role vampires played in the birth, growth, and near-death of our nation.

What a spin on history!

I knew what the story was about prior to listening to the book (The title alone is pretty telling!) however their were quite a few twists I didn't expect. The only thing that puzzled me was that the opening of the book started with a character that was not revisited again in the end. I'm puzzled by that but it didn't take away from the story at all. The actor was good, too. I also enjoyed the interview with the writer at the very end. I'm waiting for the movie now to see how the screenplay goes as the writer of the book wrote the screenplay.

Just "Eh" (with a one-shoulder shrug)

Alot of hype over the book and movie, but when it got down to it, for me, it was just ok. I actually got within an hour of the end and stopped listening... which is very rare for me. I just wasn't interested and cant imagine the last hour would have been worth my while. The narrator was ok, though he didn't seem particularily interested in reading the book. I think it was more content, and not the skill of the reader. This books work for some folks, not for me.

I *knew* Abraham Lincoln was a badass!

What made the experience of listening to Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter the most enjoyable?

The narrator was very good, but it was the way the author ties real historical figures into the story. Excellent story - perhaps a *bit* cheesy sometimes, but hey - read the title.

Reads like biography filled with profound depth

Would you consider the audio edition of Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter to be better than the print version?

I havent read the print version

Who was your favorite character and why?

Abraham Lincoln is my favorite character and he is protrayed as perhaps the greatest American that has ever lived.

Which scene was your favorite?

I do not have a favorite scene. What I really enjoyed his how the author wrote this as a biography but inserts some beautiful insight to Lincoln's thought process. I found gems in this books such as “The more precious His gift, the more anxious God for its return, ” or "I can see his soul, if he indeed had such a thing, departing. Bidding an unexpected frightful farewell to such a long long life. One undoubtfully filled with happiness and agony, struggle and success. Filled with moments to beautiful to share. To painful to recall. It was all ending now and he was so afraid. Afraid of what nothingness awaited him. Or worse, what punishment... and then he was gone." Great Writing!

If you could rename Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, what would you call it?

The American.

Any additional comments?

I can understand how history buffs can have a problem with rewriting history, especially when so much fact is interwined with fiction. However, this book is a brilliant novel of fiction.

Everything I had hoped for and so much more. It was more historically factual than I anticipated.
