Publisher's summary

Eight hundred women and children begin a 1,200-mile journey on foot across Japanese-occupied Malaya. At journey’s end, only 30 will still be alive. This is the story of one woman, of her ordeal, and of how she was saved by the sacrifice of an Australian soldier. It is a story of rare individual courage in the face of certain death, and hope in the face of despair.

BONZA!!!!!

I read another book by Nevil Shute. While researching the author, I read many recommendations for this book. I can see why. An epic novel revolving around two amazing people that met though divine providence.

Dated but nice

I really loved the first half of the story. The second half it was hard not to wince on all the political incorrectness.

Fascinating story

This was my first book by Nevil Shute but it won't be my last.

I especially liked the narrative being written from the elderly solicitor's perspective. Although in the last few chapters you could tell where the story was going, you wouldn't know how it got there until you finished.

Beautifully read, wonderful audio version of a classic

Beautifully read story of the good in people and their triumph over hardship. So lovely to revisit a favorite Neville Shute from my childhood beautifully read with authentic-sounding Scottish, Queensland Australia, and English characters by Neil Hunt on Audible. Simply wonderful!

Brilliant storytelling

Captivating story filled with humor and sadness but most of all love and courage. Inspiring. Makes one think about how easy life as we know it is and that we take so much for granted.

Best book I have listened to on Audible!

If you could sum up A Town Like Alice in three words, what would they be?

It moves right along, not all the tedious details of things like in modern books. I had to pull my car over twice and have a cry, one of despair and one of complete happiness. I would only listen 30 minutes at a time because I did not want the book to end. My favorite book prior to this one was The Chaperone, narrated by Elizabeth McGovern.

What did you like best about this story?

Anticipation

Any additional comments?

Good book to take on a long road trip.

Great!

This is one of my favorite books and the audio version is just as good. The different accents are pitch perfect.

One of my all-time favorite books

I first knew of this book in movie form, then read it, gave it a permanent place on my shelves, and have now listened to this reading of it. This, by far, has been my favorite form. The narrator does such a wonderful job with the multitude of accents that the characters came alive in a new and fresh way, as he moved seamlessly from character to character, never losing who was speaking. This story always makes me want to be a better, stronger, kinder person - I cannot recommend it highly enough.

Favorite so far!

I loved this book. The story was very well crafted and the characters believable and engaging.
The narrator was fantastic, one of the best have ever heard. I was always eager to have the time to listen, and I was sad when it came to the end.
