Publisher's summary

Jean Paget is just twenty years old and working in Malaya when the Japanese invasion begins. When she is captured she joins a group of other European women and children whom the Japanese force to march for miles through the jungle. While on the march, the group run into some Australian prisoners, one of whom, Joe Harman, helps them steal some food, and is horrifically punished by the Japanese as a result. After the war, Jean tracks Joe down in Australia and together they begin to dream of surmounting the past and transforming his one-horse outback town into a thriving community like Alice Springs...

Loved this story and it's reader

What about Robin Bailey’s performance did you like?

I really liked having a male narrator, since the book is told from that perspective. Many times as I listened I thought, "He is so right for this character and the story."

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes.

Fabulous Story with a Wonderful Narrator

This is the best book I've heard this year and will recommend it to everyone. The story is inspiring and the narration is great. Want to read more of Nevil Shute and eager to listen to Robin Bailey narrate again.

A surprisingly glorious and epic read!

Most of the reviews on "Alice" were by women with only a small percentage coming from a male perspective. Not a problem, but nonetheless, still had me curious as to whether this book was going to work for me as fiction.

Work did it? Yes! In a big way! Expertly narrated and told (not that it matters) from a male perspective, this story, once unfolded is simply glorious! The essence of life in all its complexities gush from the characters and events. I found myself totally, emotionally connected, to a degree I did not expect.
