Under Christie’s kindly hand, the girls know they have some difficult choices to make. Indeed, none of them quite realised how much they needed the sense of laughter and loyalty that abounds when five women become friends.

    "Good Overall"

I really enjoyed this book overall. I loved feeling like I was getting to know the characters. To be honest, I would have liked the women themselves to be a little more flawed and for the ending to be more realistic. I liked the writing enough that I'm buying an earlier book by this author, so I think that's a good endorsement.

    "Uplifting story of five women"

Although the ending was a bit storybook romance, this is a great light read if you are looking for an encouraging novel about love. I also enjoyed the positive and healthy relationships the women had at work . . . a feel-good novel overall.

"Great book about friends and relationships"

This book was really fun! Five women work together and really don't know each other. They end up becoming very close. They help one another through some difficult and happy times. The book is funny and has a good story line with some serious parts. Dawn is making plans to get married, Grace is unhappily married, Anna is unhappily single because her boyfriend left her, Raychel is happily married and Christie is their new, wonderful boss.

I had not paid attention to how long I had been listening, and when I thought the author was going to wrap it up, the book pleasantly continues. I was happy with the ending of each woman's story line. Whether or not everything is realistic really does not matter. This is a good book.

    "Not up to standard"
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

Less time spent on the dark side.

What was most disappointing about Milly Johnson’s story?

Too much dreary plodding through the down side.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

Milly Johnson is a great writer and her work always flows nicely. There are some nice bits in here, it just spends way too much time plodding through the miserable dark sides of its main characters lives. Johnson is a pleasure to read in general because her stories set up a character or characters in a life that isn't what they could achieve, examines why they are settling for less than they are, and then takes us through the transformation process to achieve a better life. This is the pattern with all the Milly Johnson books I have read, and I enjoy very much her examination of what causes women to get into less-than situations and what sort of processes and transformations they go through in order to live to their full potential. In this book, unlike "A Spring Affair" (one of my favorites and the one that caused me to get more Milly Johnson in my library), the character development in pretty shallow, the motivations are over simplified, minimal time is spent on internal transformation and growth, and worst of all the dreary story of Dawn and her miserable fiancé (and his wretched family) just goes on and on and on and on. It's depressing to read about and there's not much to be learned from it, it just drags on interminably. If you want a good chic lit empowerment story try "A Spring Affair" by the same author, it's much better-at least two thirds of the book are about the joy of growing and becoming yourself, and only the first third is an exploration of what happens when you don't stand up for yourself.

"Feel good book which i really enjoyed"

I very much enjoyed this story. There were a lot of characters to remember - so it took a few chapters for it all to gel but once I got into the flow, it was excellent. The different stories of all 5 women were so interesting and kept me enthralled. Milly Johnson so knows how to write a good book!

What made the experience of listening to A Summer Fling the most enjoyable?

Enjoyed the story line. Not as good as some of her other books but loved that we got an update on the old characters from other books too

    "Female Friendship at its best!"
What did you love best about A Summer Fling?

Milly Johnson does a fantastic job of writing a believable friendship that is both supportive and fun, without the sap.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Anna. Written in a very real, believable way while participating in a storyline that seems a bit a fantastical.

Which character – as performed by Colleen Prendergast – was your favorite?

Dawn. Prendergast gave her such a fun, sarcastic demeanor while not making her a token comic relief.

Excellent book. Had me hooked from the first minute until the very last. I could relate to all the characters and it had me crying at some points and then laughing out loud (on a crowded train) at others.

    "What a wonderful audiobook"

This is the first time I have listened to anything by Milly Johnson, but it won't be the last! This book made me laugh out loud as well as making me shed a little tear. It is a lovely gentle story about the lives of women who work together - and I always love a story that has a happy ending! It is wonderfully written and I didn't want to stop listening from the start right to the end - however sleep and work got in the way!

"Feel good factor in buckets ……"

Not normally a fan of chick flick type genres – but wanted something light and not too taxing on the old grey matter. It’s a bit far fetched and exaggerated, but underneath the author has perfectly summed up the real life experience and situations of many women. I could empathise with every character, as I have at least one friend who has had the similar experience of each of the characters. This a tale that is mostly funny, but also pulls at the heart strings and I was willing the characters to make the right choices. The narrator does a brilliant job of telling the tale and the accents – hilarious. It made me appreciate my own girl friends both in and outside of the workplace. I will certainly be looking to Milly Johnson in the future.

"First book by this author I have listened to."

There is a certain excitement when you find an author you have never read or listened to before. I have looked up all the other books completed by Milly Johnson and I will certainly read them. A summer fling, a book about a group of woman who support each other with the help of their female boss. Each person is a story within a very readable novel. I loved it, it was funny and really well written. A group of women not bitching but supporting each other was a lovely change. Some of my funniest and enjoyable holidays have been with a group of women and no we were not on a man hunt. We enjoyed each others company and this book gave that sort of feeling. Brilliant.
