Critic reviews

“With the combination of an ancient Celtic myth and the legend of the Headless Horseman, Blackwell's story is a leave-the-light-on kind of page turner... If you like suspenseful thrillers, check out A Soul to Steal." (Indie Reader - Featured on USA Today Books )

Excellent story - not what one expects at first.

What did you like best about this story?

Highly engaging. The slow transition from a semi-typical serial killer to a highly unusual supernatural thriller (based on Irish mythology and early American goth horror) worked very will surprisingly. I would not have thought so had someone cursorily told me about it, yet it does.

Have you listened to any of Brian J. Gill’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Gill is excellent in his performances of both of Backwell's novels. His accents are believable and he nails the nuanced vocal inflections that this text sometimes demands.

Who was the most memorable character of A Soul to Steal and why?

Quinn and Kate are both highly likable characters. Their goodness and edginess is a combination that works well for me.

Brian Gill gives voice to a great story

While many would wait till the fall for a good ghost story, I bought the audio version of 'a soul to steal' to re-read a favorite this spring. I love the story an was most impressed with the voices and emotions Mr Gill gave the characters. This is a great performance of an interesting story.

genuinely creepy

This is a great Halloween read, and it is noticeably lacking in the characters who make horrible decisions so common in the horror genre. Instead, these characters are savvy and realistic, which makes the story all the more creepy. There's even some Celtic tradition thrown in, which is what got me interested in the first place. Highly recommend!

Was Pleasently Surprised by how good it was

I listened to this book with no perceived thought since I never heard of this author before. Figured it would be fun to listen to a new author and maybe fine someone new to follow.
We'll I did! Excellent story, interesting characters a mystery I did Not figure out, which is extremely rare!

Great story idea, poor execution

I loved the idea. The serial killer and the phantom are great. However, the execution was poor, too many errors and a poor love story arc. Also, the performance was only okay.
