Publisher's Summary

Skip thought he had it all: the fabulous husband, the great apartment, and the teaching job he'd always wanted. Even the cat was perfect. When his partner of eight years decides he wants something else-something that doesn't involve Skip or the apartment or even the cat-Skip decides it's time to go home to the other side of the country.

However, Skip's hometown doesn't just hold a loving meddling mother but also the memories of his awkward crush on a boy he met his senior year in high school. A boy he humiliated himself in front of just when it looked as if his fantasies might become reality. Finding out Paul Miller is now working at the same high school where Skip has just been hired flips his world upside down. After a heated night together, Skip is happy being friends with benefits. Paul will have to convince him love is worth the risk.

    "Great story, brilliant narrator!"
Where does A Simple Romance rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I've never listened to an audiobook before. I won this in a contest, and had to create an Audible account to claim my prize. I have to say, it's set a high bar for other audiobooks to live up to, but I'm grateful for the experience. Thank you J.H Knight and Dreamspinner Press!

What did you like best about this story?

This book has everything you could want in romantic fiction.

What does Nick J. Russo bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Nick did an amazing job of giving each character a unique and easy-to-recognize identity. He also portrayed all of the different emotions beautifully. I found myself replaying some parts over and over just because he gave such a great performance.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I did my best to arrange times to listen to it in large chunks, because part of the enjoyment came from immersing myself in the story and letting the world fall away while I was listening.

    Any additional comments?

The title does a good job of setting up the story. It is a simple romance, a lovely, warm, sexy story with a satisfyingly happy ending. I highly recommend both this author and this narrator, and I fully intend to acquire more books from both of them.

    "Loved it!!"

Perfect lovely sweet story with just a tiny dash of drama. The narrator was great but my only quip that bothered me was the spanish words when Paul ranted in spanish were done horribly! Like garbled badly, next time practice practice on pronunciation since you are a voice actor Mr. Russo, other than that performance was great I will listen to more of your works :)

"Great author and narrator, sweet story"

Skip is at a loss. He’s lost his husband of years to another man and can’t stomach the idea of staying in the same apartment or even the same city as his ex, so he moves back home to his mother’s house for regrouping. She convinces him to get a job teaching at his old high school and then drops several big hints that he might enjoy meeting the new physics teacher while he’s there.
It turns out the physics teacher is none other than Skip’s first crush, Paul. While both are now out and proud, back then only Paul was, and Skip couldn’t deal with it, so he never acted on their mutual attraction. Now that they’re adults, the only thing holding Skip back is the fact that Skip is only 4 months out of a serious relationship and not sure he wants to be involved in another so soon, on the rebound.
In addition, Paul is a widower- his husband died from cancer two years ago and Skip is leery of being Paul’s rebound man, as well.
But… the two are mega-hot for each other and after their first date there is really no slowing them down.
The rest of the bulk of the story is Paul and Skip deepening their relationship. It inches forward, Skip panics, Paul soothes, they proceed again, and repeat.

Paul (who has the patience of a saint!) puts up with all of Skips panicky moments and manages to see the forest for the trees. He keeps his eyes on the prize, knowing, pretty much from day one, that he and Skip are in it for the long run.
Things are looking up when Skip suddenly asses out in a big way and it looks like Paul might actually leave him. But, Skip finally comes around and accepts what’s been in front of him all this time and the two have a delightfully satisfying HEA.
    **
This is a tremendously cute story. There is only a minimum of angst, as the title suggests, this is a simple romance. Both Skip and Paul’s moms connive to get their boys together and it’s hilarious. The chemistry is hot and plentiful, and beyond a little frustration at Skips obliviousness to their perfection as a couple, this is a very enjoyable, light, and fun story.
    I give the story a 4.5 of 5 stars
    Audio:
Nick J Russo is a great narrator. He does a nice job with Skip and an okay job with Paul. (Paul is Hispanic and when he bursts into Spanish diatribes at Skip’s foolishness you can tell Nick has to struggle with the language.) I always enjoy Nick’s narrations and he didn’t disappoint here.
    I give the narration a 4 of 5 stars
Overall Impression: (rounded up from 4.25 stars)

    4.5 stars – I loved it

I wanted to slap Skip somewhat fierce!!!! The trouble is, Skip has trust issues, and he can't seem to wrap his head around the idea that somebody else might actually want to date him. Or love him. Or marry him. Or have kids with him. Or date him. Or...hmm. See how repetitive that got? Sadly, that's where things start to crumble just a skosh for this book...
So much time is spent focusing on Skip doubting himself and not wanting to label his relationship with Paul that it became frustrating--and slightly boring--to listen...
    In Skip's own words:
"It's so simple--easy, ya know? Getting together with someone and falling in love and getting comfortable and, like, it's almost too simple, right?"
    And Paul:
"So you figure if you complicate it enough, keep it from being easy, then it'll work out in the end?"
Right ON Paul! You should have told Skip that, like, 40 pages ago!

A pleasant and mostly forgettable read. I will probably listen to it again at some point. I think I like "The Last Thing He Needs" better.

    My Review:
    Overall: 3.5
    Performance: 3.25
    Story: 3.5

I listened to this book and audio and admit I probably would have liked it more if I had simply read it. The narrator wasn't bad, but he had a voice for Paul that I just hated. And the problem was when it came to sexy times, it got even worse and made the story twist so that it sounded like some sort of bad 70's porn. Not an issue with the story line at all...and honestly, my problem with the narrator was probably only one that I would have...so take my opinions on all that with a grain of salt.

Overall, the book was pretty entertaining, although I have to admit that I think Skip's internal struggle with committing to Paul for anything more than just sex went on a tad too long. I did enjoy his mother in the story and getting to see Paul's interactions with all his family. Skip is gun-shy when it comes to committing to more...understandably so when his other relationship fell to pieces which completely surprised him. He wasn't ready to have his heart shattered and truly never saw it coming.

I liked those aspects of the story line. I liked that both the guys are teachers and their connection from school. There are some sexy times and while the book is pretty short, it provides an entertaining afternoon's distraction. I do enjoy this author's voice.

Enjoyed it but not enough variation in the plot. Happy for it to have been longer if there had been few twists and turns. It was long enough. Liked the way author treated Skip and Paul in their developing relationship. It was very real
