Publisher's Summary

K. J. Charles turns up the heat in her new Society of Gentlemen novel as two lovers face off in a sensual duel that challenges their deepest beliefs.

Silas Mason has no illusions about himself. He's not lovable or even likable. He's an overbearing idealist, a radical bookseller and pamphleteer who lives for revolution...and for Wednesday nights. Every week he meets anonymously with the same man, in whom Silas has discovered the ideal meld of intellectual companionship and absolute obedience to his sexual commands. But, unbeknownst to Silas, his closest friend is also his greatest enemy, with the power to see him hanged - or spare his life.

A loyal, well-born gentleman official, Dominic Frey is torn apart by his affair with Silas. By the light of day, he cannot fathom the intoxicating lust that drives him to meet with the radical week after week. In the bedroom everything else falls away. Their needs match, and they are united by sympathy for each other's deepest vulnerabilities. But when Silas' politics earn him a death sentence, desire clashes with duty, and Dominic finds himself doing everything he can to save the man who stole his heart.

What the Critics Say

"This book is so good I read it in one sitting. I just couldn’t put it down. K. J. Charles has long been one of my favorite authors, and this book doesn’t disappoint. A Seditious Affair is a beautiful love story interwoven with the realism of the political unrest of the time - another winner from K. J. Charles!" (USA Today best-selling author Carole Mortimer)

    "Adults falling in love!"
    Any additional comments?

I find myself tired of May/December romances and teenage puppy love. This book's protagonists offer a welcome change. It is so nice to see two middle aged men fall in love over books, philosophy, wine, with not so much attention to physical beauty until well after attachment is established.

I am not the biggest fan of dominance and submission, but I was not put off at all because, I don't know, the care is there. The awareness at all times of each other and of limits and care to observe that. I loved that there was discussion of why the protagonists felt the way they did and that, while the romance was at the forefront, it did not swallow their world and we got to see them moving in it, addressing their pasts and presents.

Their struggles are genuine for me; grown men who are allowed to still grow, to learn, to find love and comfort outside of the usual trappings of puppy love, insta-love and physical fascinations leading to love. The characters feel like people and I find that I cannot say that about many romances I've read.

Are there contrivances? Certainly. I do not think any romance is about the "real world;" but when the characters are texturized, 3D-entities, the contrivances melt away for me and I only want to see what happens at the end; and that definitely happened with this story.

    "A wonderful book"

I cannot recommend this highly enough. I adored this book more than I can say. I first read, then listened to the first book, A Fashionable Indulgence, and very much enjoyed it, but was somewhat dubious of the pairing in this book. A rather stiff and uppity dyed in the wool Tory carrying a torch for the equally stiff Richard and Silas, Harry's radical friend and mentor? I was dubious. Add to that Dom's liking it rough, and I was very unsure of whether or not I could suspend my disbelief enough. But KJ Charles is a marvelous writer, so I went with it. And boy was I not disappointed.

In between the rather unexpectedly well written bdsm smut is a beautiful live story between soulmates and quite a bit of interesting history as well. Not to mention great dialogue.

My only tiny complaint is that the book is sometimes quiet and hardish to hear, especially when the narrator whispers or mutters. This was only an issue with dialogue -- his normal narration was perfectly clear. And I think he did a great job differentiating characters and accents. He just spoke a bit too low on occasion and I had to often turn the volume up to hear dialogue and down during normal narration.

    "Amazing, smoking hot and educational!"

I love the second book in the Society of Gentlemen series by KJ Charles as much as I loved the first one. It is amazing, smoking hot ( It's just on the edge of my endurance. I'm not much of a fan of BDSM but I found the dom/sub aspect of the relationship fascinating and utterly on the context ) and especially educational.

This is a fictional romance, but based on the true events or the Cato Street Conspiracy was real ( according to author's note). What a connection between two completely different worlds.

Silas ran a bookshop that sold mostly political philosophy. His nights and evenings, except Wednesdays, were taken up with writing the seditious libels and attending meetings of the people who could no longer bear the stranglehold of the rich on England’s neck. He hated the aristocracy and especially one who let the people starve. On the other hand, Dominic was part of little wealthy private group which offered not only a space in which they could be honest, but also mutual protection. However, both of them strongly stand for their so different political beliefs.

As always Matthew Lloyd Davies was the perfect narrator for this book. Frankly, I'm addicted to his magnificent British accent voice.

The author did a great job at keeping me interested at the whole times. I highly recommend this to anyone that likes a MM historical erotic romance and I cannot wait to listen to the next!

"What a fantastic story to listen to!"

Silas and Dom had me from the very beginning. I loved seeing how these guys and the story moved forward. I was siding with both of them at different times. The way K.J told their beliefs, compassion, and care for not only each other, but the world they lived in was so good. <3 Silas & Dom <3
I enjoyed Matthews narration of these guys and the secondary characters.

    Story
    "Kink done right!"

Typically, when characters have a kink for dubious consent, it's written with one character taking advantage of them as they get off. Which is, let's be fair: Illegal and pretty darn messed up.

It was an absolute -delight- to see how Mason developed ways for them to communicate consent without words since Dom was so keen on being 'forced' and likes to verbally say 'no' in bed.

I also like the relationship between Dom & his bestie. Too often, kinky characters have kinky friends or at least understanding friends. To see someone have to -adjust- to the idea is just so very human. So real. Yet, it was done without malice and I appreciate this story so much for acknowledging that Dom's a little different, but not making the plot all about that particular struggle.

In fact, the political tension is what makes all of these Society of Gentlemen books so great. The romance and friendships are all treated with equal importance and the reader really ges a feel for these men's personalities & motivations.
I absolutely recommend you read this, right now!
    Or um
    Listen to it

    "Amazing!"

KJ Charles is an absolute genius! Silas Mason is one of my favorite characters. It was kinky and romantic and everything in between. The love between Dom and Silas was beautiful. The narration was really great as well and I loved all of the accents (especially Silas').

I've listened to this twice already and I anticipate listening many more times as well. Highly recommended!

    Story
"This book has everything anyone could wish for"
Where does A Seditious Affair rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

    Definitely in the top 10

What did you like best about this story?

Apart from the meticulously researched historical content; the love story between the two main characters was breathtaking and superior.

What does Matthew Lloyd Davies bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

Matthew Lloyd Davies brings another dimension, he breathes life into an already wonderful story. His range of tone and voices is incredible, I had to remind myself that this was one man, reading a myriad of different characters of all ages, class etc. Simply superb!

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Not really, the whole book, from start to finish is perfect. If I had to choose one; the first kiss between Silas and Dominic was stunning and moving.

    Any additional comments?

I have only recently read/listened to this author with the first two books in this series and I am firmly hooked. I have already searched her backlist and been disappointed to learn that there are no other audio versions available for download in the UK. I only hope that the partnership between the author and narrator continues and we see some more of this talented duo.

"This lady can write a Good story!"
Would you consider the audio edition of A Seditious Affair to be better than the print version?

Yes, only because it is read to you by Matthew Lloyd Davies and he pulls you into the story and characters that KJ Charles has created.

What other book might you compare A Seditious Affair to, and why?

I don't think I can compare A Seditious Affair to any other book I have read....KJ Charles is in a league of her own.

Have you listened to any of Matthew Lloyd Davies’s other performances? How does this one compare?

A Fashionable Indulgence. The first book in KJ Charles A Society of Gentlemen series. I think both are equal in performance. KJ Charles couldn't have got a better man for the job.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Prepare to think and be dazzled.

    Any additional comments?

Will make you rethink on your convictions.
